    Default Streaming to ipods /ipad?

So the kids are wondering if they can stream stuff I have on my media center to their ipods or Clikchics ipad. I'm assuming it just natively doesn't work, but will it work at all without having to first convert the stuff to an apple supported format, and do I need some sort of special dnla software on my media center to make it work?

Yes - it works - assuming your media centre is dlna compliant - but you will need an app. I have used ArkMC Lite - it seems to work okay.

Yes. You can install XBMC on any IOS platform, I believe. Detailed guides are on the website. There are other media players but XBMC is the one I have always used.

If it's just movies get a wifi harddrive or use xtreme player and put on iPad like we do.

You can use a program called Plex.

It's a media server and you can install clients on virtually anything. But I think there's a small fee for Apple /android apps....

Can't believe I didn't look at Lifehacker. Saying that, everything just works with my phone and tablet, other PC's and the fetch TV. I have mediaportal on my home theatre pc, but I think it's using windows media player s is dlna server and everything just works. Don't think I even set anything up. I just use es file Explorer on my phone or tablet, and file Explorer on pc/laptops. Why can't the 'fantastic' apple media products work the same way?

Because they want to dumb down the apple experience and do it their way or none at all

Because of open protocols that allow hacking.

Air video is good, or used to be. If you can't be bothered streaming, just install cinexplayer and upload content to it, it's a great media player and plays avi, mp4 etc, basically anything. I found streaming inconsistent speed wise
