Default Best Public Book-able Golf Course in Melbourne?

    Hi guys,

I'm helping a friend organise a golf day for a number of visiting foreign corporates in Melbourne in late January. They will effectively be two groups of public players trying to get on - they won't have handicaps. Understand that the likes of Royal Melbourne is not bookable, and the likes of Moonah Links and St Andrew's Beach are maybe a bit too far (1 hr drive). Ideally looking for somewhere they can get to within 20 minutes of the city (if possible). Having not lived or played golf in Melbourne before, was wondering if anyone might know whats the best golf course that we might be able to book in at?

Thanks all - had a quick look, doesn't appear that any of these are in the Top 100 Golfer's Digest, but it seems Yarra Bend is the best bet.

They are playing NSW GC in Sydney so it will be quite a step down when they get to Melbourne

For a "better" good course I would make the drive down to Mornington Peninsula for the sandbelt courses.

    1. St Andrews
    2. Dunes
    3. Moonah Links

All very accessible to the public.
Or 13th Beach may be a little nearer to cbd.

Top 100, St. Andrews and the dunes any day it's well worth the trip

All other city public tracks fail in comparison, nothing even close.

Thanks, unfortunately those are all an hour out of the city!

Sorry mate - to clarify, I'm after the best golf course within 20-30 minutes of the city that the public can get on (how expensive the green fees are is not an issue, as long as they can get on) I guess one way to judge "best" is to see where the course is ranked on the top 100.

Give Southern a call, as they may not have a corporate booking that day.

My mate organisers Corp golf for overseas players to get into Royal Melb, Kinston Heath and a few other courses. If $ is not an issue, then you can talk to him.
PM me your details, and I will pass it on to him,

Interesting idea - I think I might just suggest to them that they go the extra half hour (probably by car, but I'll raise the chopper option haha) and have a hit down at one of the courses on the Peninsula, as it seems based on everyone's suggestion there's just a huge gap between those courses and available public City courses.

Thanks all for your advice - have been very helpful!

If you ask really, REALLY nicely you may be able to get on to LaTrobe, Green Acres or Eastern to the north-east of the city.

Otherwise whats Brighton / Ivanhoe like?

Most courses, even sandbelt courses, will allow OS/interstate guests to play the course. Obviously depends on the day and can be quite costly. I say just call the club and ask.

Fair point actually, yeah. Bastard interstaters get looked after better than the locals do!

They are all foreigners but not all of them are members of a golf course at home - which makes it pretty difficult.

Sandy isn't 20 mins from the city. And if playing on the weekend, expect a 5+ hour round.

    Hi Icestorm,

Not sure if you have been able to secure or lock anything in but I recommend Sunshine Golf Club...very nice track with nice food to enjoy after the round. It's just 20 minutes from the city and has carts available for hire...here is the link to the website www.sunshinegolfclub.com.au....you definitely won't be disappointed with the quality of the course and price. Also you can get 7 day green fee access to the course.

I think their itinerary forces them to play on the Australia Day long weekend... I suspect that will limit their options somewhat...
