    Default Automatic Watches

Anyone collect automatic watches at all?

Looking at purchasing a new one for myself - have been eyeing off Omegas for awhile but not sure I can bring myself to invest that much. Otherwise, time to look at some watches in the flesh I think!

Peppa's when you say 'automatic' do you mean 'self winding'?

I have two self winding watches, a Rolex Explorer (Oyster perpetual movement) that I purchased secondhand from a dealer in Sydney in 2010.. it cost around $4000 but, is a beautiful & classy watch. I can pass you on details of a couple of dealers in Sydney if you are interested.

I also have an Ingersoll which I bought in Singapore for around $500. Ingersoll were an American watch company that went bust (quite a long time ago now) & I think the brand-name has been purchased by a Chinese company. That said, the movements get a pretty good write up; admittedly, not swiss but, still a pretty good movement from all reports. Ingersolls have a very vintage look about them & they are also quite a large & chunky watch. No problems with mine, I purchased in 2012 & it runs beautifully. I'm not sure how available these are in Australia though.

Let me know if you want any more info... I do like watches in general, I have a number of quartz movement watches as well including a Tag Heuer that my parents bought me for my 21st (approx 25 years ago) which is worth a small fortune now & an Omega Ocean Master that needs a full rebuild.

There are a number of good second hand, swiss watch dealers in Sydney; well worth checking out.

    Regards

I bought myself a Raymond Weil last year. The Freelancer with the yellow dial. Beautiful watch.

I did also shortlist an Omega, but just felt that the Raymond was a bit more modern and was something a little different.

The watch really didn't cost me as much as I thought it would. The RRP on these things are B.S. No one should pay full RRP for a watch. You should be aiming to get at least 30-40% off RRP. And if you play your cards right, if you travel OS, you can claim an extra 10% off.

Which model you looking at Peppas?

My daily wear watch is a 38mm seiko auto from 1975. A birthday spa with a watchmaker and it is about 3 sec/day fast.

Autos are cool. I have a drawer full of dead quartz watches that I have steadfastly remained unexcited about replacing the battery on.

I would really like a hi-beat type of movement from the late 60's-70's but I'm about 10 years late on picking up one of those for reasonable $.

I can't wear watches, they kept getting badly damaged against machinery or ending up covered in ink at work.

You got it Carlton, automatic, self winding, mechanical, doesn't have a battery, etc.

I haven't really picked a model or a brand or a price range. If I end up getting an Omega or Rolex it might be a 2nd hand one so some reputable dealers would help!

I really only got into watches earlier this year. I've had my grandfathers old watch in my drawer for years... pulled it out earlier this year, tried it on the wrist and it fit perfectly. Gave it a wind and it was running again. So awesome!

Most definitely.. I'm struggling with the concept of buying a secondhand iPhone off ebay & that's only $300...

Agreed. There are some things you don't buy second hand (if you have a choice)

I'm wearing an Orient 'orange mako' divers watch that I bought for surfing, and I used to have a blue seiko one with a cloth band until I left it on top of my car when I was taking my wetsuit off and drove away. I like the idea of automatic watches, but I'd have to say I can't see the point of paying big dollars for an expensive one.

If you want to get right into it I once stumbled across a forum - http://forums.watchuseek.com/forum.php - where the watch lovers are almost as tragic as the club swappers around here. You might be able to pick something up cheap in their classifieds?
Still not playing enough GolfLink | Slightly less terrible stats brought to you by Golfshot - F: 57%, GIR: 23%, UD: 14%, P: 34. Wow, improvement! | Nickent brand ho or tightarse? You be the judge!

Cheers Larry, I forgot about that forum... I will have a look through their classifieds as well. I'd probably rather try and then buy but who knows...

    There's also places like this;
    http://www.watchtrader.com.au/

I've heard this place is pretty good, haven't personally bought anything from them. But definitely prefer that over ebay.

Vice, I get having a watch if you surf. Given everyone now has a mobile phone are watches now useless except as some type of expensive bangle?

Rolex datejust for golf, and a Sea-gull moonphase chronology for work.

    Mechanical watches are brilliant.

I recommend the steinhart ocean line for the best value-for-money Swiss watch.

All I am rocking at the moment is a Titoni Space Star from the 70s or 80s. It's a sweet watch but I also want something with sapphire crystal on it that is a little more scratch resistant

They're great for that arm flick and elbow bend that serves the dual purpose of checking the time and notifying everyone within shouting distance that you're a pretentious wanker.

I imagine there wouldn't be many people under the age of say 25 who'd wear a watch nowadays. I feel lost if I forget mine.
