Fortunately the Kwinana Cup isn't a handicap match play event.

So if the anchor is like 2, how should the hc system handle returning players, since hc's don't expire any more? Sure it doesn't bother me having a hc much lower than I can play to atm, and since I'm not gonna play much more than I was when on my 2 year slide, I doubt it's gonna get close. But I'd say I'm the exception, being that I don't care if I'm competitive or not and just wanna play. But there'd be plenty out there that would be pissed off having to have a hc lower than they can play to. I was talking about it a bit with the guy I shared a cart with on Saturday. He said he's got a mate just back who has a flagged round from 2001.
I must be a bizzaro world sandbagger, as I'm much happier having a hc much lower than my ability.

I'd say most golfers would prefer a cap that's lower than their ability for those "what are you off" questions.

Yes most would do but there are more than a handful of golfers at each club that look after their caps to be ready for certain comps.

And they will continue to do it under any handicapping system.

Goughy you don't strike me as the type that would really care about coming back to a handicap too low. I think most returning golfers would be the same, and if they're keen enough their handicap should match their ability before too long providing they play enough. Not sure if it's still the case but there used to be handicap exemptions for medical reasons. Same could be done for golfers coming back after x amount of years.

I don't see why you couldn't do new handicap cards for someone who's been out of the game for 3+ years.

Agree 110% Shazza. Like they always say a good scorer beats a good player and those that cheat are only cheating themselves.

My opening 3 rounds since starting again have been 22, 20 and 27 over, but my hc won't change much cause shortly 7 of my 8 rounds will be in a row and it's gonna take a few months to start getting into those.
Luckily for me it's the golf I enjoy, and personal improvement and I know my hc is not representative of where I am so it means little to me. But I bet my circumstances would annoy some people who would consider it unfair.
All you have to do is contact your club and they will adjust your handicap for you. The handicapper will probably go halfway between what you are shooting now and what you use to shoot.
Easy fix.

Why would they do that? They should be protecting the rest of the field, rather than making one person feel better.

Protecting them from what? Do you assume that all returning from a break golfers are sandbaggers? Those that I've seen seem to have been older dudes who like to win 4 balls and have been playing for years.

From the guy who is given a charity handicap who then figures out what he is doing after a few games

3 shots and reduce the max cap back to 27.. That's coming from me who started off 34 and it wasn't really fair because getting my handicap was first priority rather than playing socially for a few months As soon as I worked out what I was doing plus some lessons I won too many comps on my way down to where I am currently on a cap that suits me.. I not complaining much as I won a few vouchers but I will admit the current system doesn't benefit the good consistent golfer.. As for returning players I think 2+ years away should be able to hand in new cards

I wish the ladies were capped at 27 but alas out to 45 they go. I lose track of how many shots they have actually taken on the longer holes.

Can I change my answer to 2 (because I'm now two shots off my lowest cap)?
I'm not very good at this. I came down from the dreaded blue anchor, but only won a couple of golf balls (worth less than 40% of the comp. fee outlaid each time).

The anchor is a simplification of the method USGA uses to limit rapid handicap increases. You blokes would be headless if we had of adopted their system verbatim.

Criticism doesn't bother me, as it means I am doing something and people are watching.

Agree.
Mate of mine has quit for a while due to family comitments and the like.
Played off 4-5 for years.
He hasnt been a member for over 2 years now, but with his job gets invited to a stack of Corporate and Charity days so plays at least once a month.
I played with him last wed, he shot 10 over in an absolute gale, had he putted better he would of had maybe 6 over....
5 shots is way too much imo.

What handicap did he play off?
I was under the impression that he would still be off 4-5, if that was his last handicap under golflink.
My bro was similar, but his layoff started before golflink came in. First handicap back was 11, after 3 cards, and he has no problem getting 3-4 birdies a round.
