Default Monthly Mug Profile - August 2013 - Daves

    Username: Daves

    Home club: Redland Bay

How often do you play: Every other day.

    Current handicap: 11.8

    Lowest ever handicap: 8.3

Dream handicap: I would like to be able to get back down to single figures and stay there.

How long have you played golf: I started in the early 80s in my early 20s. I played for about 3 years, and then work and family got in the way for about 25 years. I retired in 2007 and started playing again.

How did you catch the golfing bug: I moved to a western NSW country town and one of my friends was a regular player and got me into it. I played, officiated, coached and administrated a lot of sport when I was younger.

    What's currently in your bag:

    WITB thread here

    Bag: Sun Mountain MCB (Blue)
    Titleist 910 D3 9.5*with AD DI 7x
    Fairways:Titleist 910 F 15* with AD DI 7s
Hybrids: Cobra Baffler Pros 2, 3 & 4R, Fujikura Speeder Pro
    Irons:Titleist AP2s 5- PW; Nippon N950GH +1”, R Flex
Wedges: Muira Forged 52* and King Cobra Phil Rodgers 60*
    Putter: Scotty Kombi, 34"

What golf ball do you use: Varies a bit, currently using Penta TP5s. I use a variety, including yellow versions when conditions make a white ball hard to see.

Dream golfing purchase: My own golf shop and driving range!

Favourite golf course played: I would say it was a 3 way tie with Royal Adelaide, Joondalup (Quarry) and RQ.

Dream golf destination, or trip: The Masters or The Open at St Andrews.

If you could pick three others, dead or alive, to play a round with, who would they be: My Dad, I have never had the opportunity to play with him (he is too arthritic these days). The Golden Bear and Seve.

If you could pick three ozgolfers to play a round with, who would they be: Tough question, have had a lot of good Ozgolf rounds. Of the ones I have played with I guess Nudgee, Perci and Hux. We always have fun, get on well and there is always plenty of chat and sledge. Of those I haven’t played with yet I guess the Yoss and Rubins double act sounds like it would be a pisser not to be missed!?

Your favourite golf memory: I have had a few rounds where I get in the zone and manage to go deep for a nine or so, and have managed to hold it together for a couple over par results. I always seem to play well in Pro AMs for some reason and have had some of my best scores in them. 5 birdies in a round (finished 3 over) is my best golf so far. My ambition is to keep it going and break par one of these days.

Have you ever had a hole in one? If yes, talk us through it: My first one was on Reddie Bay 13th, 198m par 3 (Index 5) in a Monthly Medal. I think I was off 23 at the time, so it was a 1 a 6 in stableford terms! A pure 3i, that never looked like missing.

I have aced the 16th (156m Par 3) twice as well, but not in competition (though I have gone close a number of times).

Have you ever had a “Solarman moment”? If yes, talk us through it: Plenty! One that comes to mind was playing the short par 4 17th at Gailes in a Dingo one day. I tried to drive the green and ended up in the trees on the right. I was waiting to play my shot and was nearly taken out by a shank by another Ozgolfer who will remain nameless! Reset myself and played a bunt under the trees onto the green. Then realised I had knocked it onto the neighbouring 10th green!, not the 17th! I did make the up and down for par though!

Favourite current tour player: Mickelson, amazing skills and loves to attack the course. Great to watch imo.

Favourite golfer past or present? Why: Jack, I grew up during his career and he is still the greatest there has been. Seve the Magician, if only they had the TV coverage we take for granted these days, during his career.

Favourite Australian golfer: Kel Nagle, an absolute gentleman and under rated with 61 professional victories. He won a major by beating one of the greats and narrowly lost one in a playoff with another legend.
