Au Contrare, a chronic cheat will have an accurate handicap for his ability that includes his cheating skill. Golf Cheats like this are not so different from chronic liars, theives, or serial killers. People are not born this way or suddenly become this, they all start out with a conscience just like you and me. It all begins with a little lie, a little cheat an so on. They will feel guilty about that. But then as they probably were not caught, gave into the temptation and did it again, and again. Each time that they cheat their conscience is eroded a little bit, so they feel less and less guilt, and therefore they repeat more often. Eventually they get to the point where they consider this behaviour is normal and do it without blinking an eyelid. You will notice this if you confront them about it. There will be no remorse, no admitting and a bunch of lies to cover it. One guy that I caught out claimed the other bloke in the cart marked both cards and he has brain damage, spent 30 minutes on the phone telling me what a good bloke he was and didn't want anyone to think he cheats. Next time he got caught it was that he was on medication and drinking too much. The stupidity and arrogance of him is that he has a scratch or better handicap and recorded scores of 10+ better than he had when playing with other low markers. Obviously it's easy to knock off a stroke or two with the pencil but not 10 in that situation. The guy clearly lives in his own world, and I am sure we all have met people like that.

It is only if you use it as a DMD. Effectively ALL smartphones are banned as DMDs. And they are ok to use otherwise provided you don't use the compass etc.

Call me "old school" but smartphones are taking over peoples lives....
To see a group of kids sitting together and not talking, but texting each other or posting on facebook is stupid.
As for playing a round of golf, there is nothing sooo important that it cannot wait until you get back to the club house to text or post (except maybe a hole in one and then only in comp )

I put my stats in on course... and I have played with a couple of people lately who thought I was SMSing when I was doing it. They were fine with it when I set them straight

Monsta, aren't you the same guy who sent me a Gamebook friend request, which requires you to use a smart phone while on the course?

    Monsta,

I see you put through a friend request on GameBook yesterday. How are you planning on updating your scores on it?

I would be updating my scores AFTER the game, not during if I ever do use it.
The requests were more for seeing how my fellow OZgolfers are doing

I used my phone to post in the 'Things you like thread' when you shanked it and choked. Very appropriate use of the device I would say!

I also texted my playing partner from Sunday to see if he had found a 'vulnerable girl with Daddy issues and too much to drink' at the races. He had.

On an Internet based forum, complaining about technology & how smart phones are ruining our lives. The irony.

Now popper, no need to go that far.... all I am saying is there is a time and place for the www and I dont think the golf course is it !! Wait until you return to the clubhouse. Its a bit rude to have to wait for some inconsiderate p**ck to finish txting before he tees off, and how he ingores you while walking up the fairway with his phone in hand txting rather than being social.

    Ohh post reported too

Matty, it was 100% pure shameless trolling.
The rule has been a long term pet hate of mine, even though I don't, and never have, used an iphone as a DMD.
For a sport that is based so heavily on honesty, I find it hypocritical of the rule makers to say to smart phone users that they don't trust you to use your iphone as a DMD because you might open the compass app. Yet it's ok to have numerous other golf related apps open. I also fail to see the reasoning behind the compass rule.

I've walked off course once after seeing dark clouds and lightning in the west. I checked the BOM site and could see it was coming straight at us. Sure enough the course got smashed 20 minutes later.

I've had 2 very close calls with lightning on course. I don't intend having a third. I'll continue to access the BOM site in future. The R&A can go to hell.

I agree with you for the most part mike, but as It was explained to me:
    (paraphrasing here)
many apps, whilst they are used for measuring distance, also activate the Compass in certain Smartphones, and can show additional information such as temperature, wind speeds etc for your current area. Apparently, rather than going through each, individual app and saying this ones ok, that ones not as well as the propensity for the apps to be updated on a daily basis, the R and A took any and all confusion out of it and said No Smartphones as DMD's (also removes the arguments for iPhones/Androids etc).

Fair enough but compass, thermometer and wind speed/direction indicator ain't gonna make a squid of difference to 99% of weekend golfers.

i don't see how a compass would help the pro's, let alone anyone else. A thermometer, the same thing. I know that they know to within a meter or so how far theyre irons go, but even they say that it all depends on how they are on the day.

Donald said in one of his videos, his 7 iron will vary up to 10m in length depending on how he's feeling, how relaxed or uptight he is etc. i doubt an extra 1 or 2* in temperature is going to affect that (or knowing for it and allowing for it)
