My opinion is that it's not your job to police him. You've got your own game to worry about.

If the committee are aware of it then they need to act.

There are many options in that situation which include ensuring a member of the match committee plays in his group.

This is something we've had to do a number of times with the juniors. Now in the men's comps juniors can't all play together. There must be an experienced adult in the group to sign their card.

After golfing with a junior yesterday, it was interesting to hear the views about Harty's former top junior.

I have heard talk about not letting groups of all juniors play comps together too. It's a real shame.

Fairly common, most clubs I have been at do, this and make it a general rule. Its not because kids cheat, but they improve rapidly and shoot some really low scores. Then a few sceptics will accuse them of cheating on the basis that they are young, inexperienced, so on.
By implementing this policy, the whiners dont have a leg to stand on.

Benefit of the doubt. I've seen a few juniors who don't count all that well. Addition, it appears, is not taught well in schools.

Our juniors weren't very good at cheating. A number of them were caught, not suspected. Repeatedly too.

That includes the recently expelled members.

It's pretty common at most clubs. Kids take a while to learn the kind of honesty that is expected in golf, it rarely comes naturally.

The funniest though was when a 12 handicapper scored 70 for a nett 58 beating his brother (in the same group) by a shot. The worst scorer in the group had a gross 72. Not one in the group shot worse than gross par yet the lowest handicapper was a 9.

Exactly right.... I have been victim of it, & have made sure it doesn't happen to my juniors at present.

Members spend 1 hour before tee off smashing schooners, and talking in the bar. They end up late to the tee, half pissed... Then complain when the kid that had been down the course every afternoon for the last month had 10 under his handicap. Clowns.

Seems a common problem, as Spud said, juniors at Gungahlin MUST play with an adult. Caused due to a few being caught with a sharp pencil and not being able to add up.

We also have a group of members that if they play together, one of the 4 always comes in with a winning score, but if they have an outsider with them, their scores are always terrible. They have been caught cheating may times, one of them dropped a ball 4 times after being in a hazard because he didnt like the lie. Then got cranky when he was told that it wasnt allowed and he would have to take penalty shots...........
These guys I would definately chip about cheating and not feel guilty or worried at all. I think that if I have to play by the rules everyone else should too, and as for this "their only cheating themselves" bulls**t, if you see someone cheating, pull them up on it and tell the committee. It didnt work for Lance and it shouldnt be allowed for anyone else.

    Getting off the soapbox now.........

Same at our club, too many of them playing off "5 or 6" and clearly not that good when you actually saw them play....

We had a few cases of magic pencil with the juniors. The early ones were treated like the full members, and had to appear before the board.

Now pro-shop staff go through their cards with them, after the game. (There was a case where two outstanding results appeared online on a Sunday afternoon, only to disappear an hour later.)

When people use the term "magic pencil", is that when someone just records a score lower than actually shot?

Magic pencil is a lot easier to procure than magic golf club.

    Yes.

Also includes amendments after the marker has totalled the score, signed the card and returned it to the player. (See also Vijay Singh.)
