Default Course briefings for the visitors to the Vic Champs

Here some important things to know before you play these courses for the first time.

    At St Andrews Beach.

1st - The green is behind the bunkers on the left. I know it looks like maybe it goes around to the right. Trust me on this. They even have a sign on the tee about this.

2nd - You can see everything as you stand on the tee of this short 4. Make your choice.

3rd - If you are long enough then try to hug the hill on the right for a look at the flag. If not, consider playing short of the gap and making the up the down from there.

4th - Right is dead, dead, dead. The green does not go as far left as you think but it is a better place to miss.

5th - On the shorter line down the left you can see less for your second shot. Right is longer but more open.

6th - There is more green on the right than you can see. The backstop is pretty handy.

7th - Centre left - fairly straight forward.

8th - Take note of the line to the green as you tee off, you are unlikely to see anything with your second shot. Heaps of room to go long at the green.

9th - The green is quite precarious. Missing long is the best choice with a hill to hold you.

10th - Even more precarious green. At least one person in your group will be trying to chip up from the million divots at the bottom of the hill on the left. Try to make this not you.

11th - Do not miss left. DO. NOT. MISS. LEFT!!

12th - Don't try to cut off too much of the inside right line and you should be fine. Green is big and has a lot of movement.

13th Pay attention here There is an aiming post halfway up the hill here. Use it. Anything more than slightly left of this post and your ball will never be seen again. The blind landing area is pretty wild and you could end up 80m away from where you thought you were. The green is bunkerless so the long second shot you will have is not too terrifying. I will donate $20 to Ozgolf for every birdie made on this hole.

14th - A miss pin high could easily turn into a sword fight with the green. Take care. 13 and 14 should be considered a par 8 as a pair.

15th - Up the hill. Fairly straightforward.

16th - Dog's breakfast. Missing left is possibly less dead if they have started clearing out for the second course. Landing short right and running it up is the best chance. The greenside bunker on the right can be putted out of. The one of the left will need crampons.

17th - Flatter down the left but you can't see as the green is hiding behind a big pile of trouble for the second shot. Right hand opens up the view but you will have to deal with side slope.

18th - A strong drive over the bunkers on the right can get a good kick along, but there is heaps of room left for those that need it late in the day.

Now take a deep breath and head back up the hill. Cart drivers might consider coming back and picking up the handful of walkers to save their weary legs.

I'll do Moonah Legends when I refresh my memory of a couple of holes - there are a couple that are not very memorable.

Things will likely be quite firm. Moonah is the one most likely to be soft.

I will need to learn to chip again. The tightly mown lies around Victorian courses kill me.

Hit it straight... Aim for greens. All the putts will break with the slope.

Cool. I guess you won't be needing the notes for Southern that I passed onto Courty then.

Moonah Legends. 17 pushup greens. A few really good holes, some OK ones and one utter dog.

1st - There is heaps of room to the left off the tee but it is definitely a 3 shotter from out there. Stay close to the bunkers with your tee shot for the best chance. Over them is a strong hit. Maybe the 1st is not the hole to push too hard.

2nd - Don't end up down on the right. Nothing good ever happens there. Too long to be truly tempting so play it safe.

    3rd - Unmemorable par 3.

4th - A fun tee shot. Long bombers may run out of fairway at the corner.

5th - Nicely shaped par 3 with some green hidden behind a dune.

6th - Centre right is my preferred line as the bunkers that cut in for the second shot on the left can be problematic. One of my favourite holes on the course.

7th - Drive bunkers on the right are cosmetic. Those seeking a birdie need to make sure they are on the correct tier of the green.

8th - If you are driving well go high and to the left. Otherwise bail to wherever you can be safe.

9th - Go down the left all the way. The right is stupidly overbunkered and you don't gain much flirting with them.

    10th - Slightly longer par 3. Dull.

11th - Reachable - up the guts with your club of choice be it driver or 5 iron.

12th - My favourite hole with the best green complex on the course. It sits down in a dell so the approach and the drive are both blind. No bunkers around this very large green so if you are in range then have a go but be ready for a chip they may need some imagination.

13th - Centre to centre left with your drive as there is a dune guarding the right.

14th - I think down the right is the best place but don't be short or right in approaching this green. It sits pushed up on a hill and the chip is tough from down there.

Thus ends the best stretch of holes 11-14 - now is the time to hold your nose

15th - Possibly the worst hole on the mornington peninsula. Utter bullshit. Go safe to the corner then probably the same club to the green. Awful.

16th - Polarising par 3 with a green that is about 50m from front to back. Personally I like it as the pin position of the day changes the hole completely. Front is a doddle if you get your club selection right. Back right is tough as the further back you go, the more the green is pushed up.

17th - Unless the tees are forward your drive will be kicked to the left. Makes for a tricker second shot. If we are up the longer guys should try to go past on the right for an easier approach shot.

18th - Massively wide fairway. The right side being slightly shorter for your approach while the left has someone's house encroaching in your line of vision.

15th is poo. I hit 4iron through the fairway and never saw it again.

    I really liked 3 and 16.

You don't get too many long irons uphill over a sandy wasteland in Canberra so it was unique for me.

I think my drive on 11 knocked out Makybe Diva.

Yep - thanks to everyone who has contributed to this, I've subscribed and fully expect to have it open on the courses.

Come to think of it I don't know how I'll find time to swing the club, between updating Golfshot, Gamebook, reading course notes and sledging!

Thanks to those that provided notes. I noticed that they were used by several people.

If you thought Spring Valley was a tough track, you would be right. I noticed that the card has slope marked on it last night, and it was 130.
