I have worked for two wireless companies that thought the same. There are huge problems with your line of thinking depending on the type of of system. laymen have no clue about these.

I hear things like this said a lot but it seems a bit wishy-washy to me. How exactly will faster Internet, as opposed to the speeds we have now, improve aged care?

Below is an excerpt from a government website. http://www.nbn.gov.au/nbn-benefits/d...and-aged-care/

GOAL: By 2015, 495,000 patients in rural, remote and outer metropolitan areas will have had virtual access to specialists and by 2020, 25 per cent of all specialists will be participating in delivering telehealth consultations to remote patients. By 2020, 90 per cent of high priority consumers such as older Australians, mothers with babies and those with a chronic disease, or their carers will be able to access individual electronic health records.

This is definitely possible with telecommunications software that I have seen now. The only thing holding it back from the masses is bandwidth.

I think it would be huge for older people to get access to specialist advice without having to travel to a big city or even another country.

For that matter any age. The possibilities are massive that is why I believe this really will change our lives if it comes in.

I dont accept your premise that bandwith is holding back care. If you have internet access surely you can Skype/use whatever other app. I realise this is the Malcolm T version but I cant see what discounts it.

In order, access, laziness, bandwith in 1000th place. Nobody is talking about denying access to punters, the bandwith stuff just strikes me as a massive furphy

Because the doctors won't do it? Your post above says they only expect a quarter of them to do it by 2020

I wouldn't expect t many doctors would be putting their hands up to diagnose illnesses over the Internet......

Could you imagine the lawsuits that could be thrown at them for mis-diagnosis if something turned out to be more serious than it looked over a computer screen??

Improving the NBN for telehealth goes beyond access to basic consultations and home monitoring for rural punters. The idea of telesurgery is a bit more exciting

Is it just me that thinks that Federal Government's "Saturation Advertising" tab must be running in the hundreds of millions at the moment?? They are everywhere and advertising just about every new program going, and on/in every medium. The Qld Government's ads are also pretty noticeable.

And we don't know the election date yet! Not sure which is the most annoying - Rudd on TV or that Powergolf advertisement "that won't lower your score".

Saturation advertising to fool the masses into thinking they are turning things around = another term of Labor coming up.

    I hope not.
It will be a sad reflection of the Australian voter if the majority vote Labour.

As a whole the Australian public can be termed as stupid at best.

This guarantees another Labor term as the "messiah" returns, while people forget just how piss poor a job he and his cohorts have done over the past 6 years.

I think it's more a statement on how many people don't like TA, and how much less they liked JG! Channel 7 did a poll last week based on MT against KR and preferred pm had MT ahead 65 to 35% and Lib clear two party preferred.

The sheeple are nuts. You don't vote for the pm. Latest poll seems to indicate the worm is turning on the vunderkud.
