I don't really know what to make of this, Heals, you take it.
PeteyD, I don't know the bloke, he is my local member, whilst clearly he is in a predominately liberal electorate, it's hard to find someone with a bad word to say about the way he engages with the local community.
If you were to choose between politicians, like we all have to what would you prefer? At the end of the day we end up with politians.
Politician A: Finished school, joined a political party immediately. Attended University and is active in politics from the age of 17. Then became a member of staff for that political party and never worked in private enterprise, ran a business, or really ever stood on their own 2 feet in terms of gaining employment in an open market based on skill/ability/experience, but rather worked in an environment where your political view is the key to your appointment to your role.
Politician B: Finished school, went to university, graduated. Either went on to post graduate honours, or moved into a career. Enjoyed a long and successful career in private enterprise, then after a bit of thought chose to sacrifice that career to enter politics. Not all did the Uni thing, but the career bit is almost universal.
One party is full of A's and the other is full of B's.
Everyone is entitled to a preference, but I like the B's myself.

Labor made pretty major changes to some of the thresholds as part of their 'weath re-distribution policy' e.g. baby bonus, family tax benefits.
I doubt any of these would be repealed but for me this crystalises the difference in the two parties. One thinks that any family on a combined income over $100k a year is rich.. the other thinks that if you are earning a decent salary and paying a sh*tload of tax that you are entitled to some relief.
You're in big trouble though, pal. I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast!
The career politicians (as in from young ...s through uni politics, straight into the party machines) concern me. I guess that is Moe's A's.
The other thing is that people seem to think it is a vote for Julia or a vote for Tony. When in reality, it is a vote for the party, as Julia showed us all to easily.

The only thing I'm confident of is after the last 3 years it's just about goodnight Irene for the minor parties.
Seemed relevant.

His electorate has had some special treatment.
Having worked for however many years of Liberal/National Government in Environmental Grants programs etc, this is just standard Government of the Day operating policy. Some of the funding decisions that were made ignoring the apolitical advice for the Natural Heritage Trust had very little scientific basis, and significantly more "Locational Priority"

The independants I dont mind, I guess they signed up with the side that gave them the bigger advantage. As for the Greens I hope that Generation X or whatever has seen their true colours now and will stop voting for them, and hopefully see them go to the Pauline Hanson graveyard for the biggest jokes in australian politics
I can only dream though.
Where is macjack when you need him? Remember his carrying on when I suggested people actually read the greens policies prior to voting for them?

There is a growing set of group As on the conservative side too. Eg. Total **** - Alex Hawke.
I am more confident about Windsor than Oakshott but know Wilkie has very little chance of survival.
Election question - ACT has two electorates with 125000 voters in each. Tasmania has 5 with 40,000 in each. Do they count heads?
How is this representative?

As far as I can tell, the territories are allocated 2 seats each regardless of population. The states' allocations are based on population. It's not supposed to be representative, it looks like a token gesture because they're not states
There are close to 360k of enrolled voters is Tassy so you math seems to be out somewhere?

Why does the ACT get anything, they are not a state.
Do you get any senators?

From http://www.aec.gov.au/FAQs/Redistributions.htm
Twelve months after the first meeting of the newly elected House of Representatives, the Electoral Commissioner ascertains the population of the Commonwealth (excluding the territories) using the latest official statistics published by the Australian Statistician. The Commissioner then makes a determination of the number of parliamentary representatives to which each state is entitled. A similar exercise is used to calculate the entitlements of the territories.
