Regular checks resulted in a melanoma identified and removed before it penetrated the epidermis. Golfer's ear.

A lesson I took out of it was to check myself. I might take some photos and then compare some moles regularly.

Just going to chime in here. My family has a strong history of cancers, melanomas and all sorts of wonderful stuff. Both sides are riddled with it.
I have had several cut out as precautionary but my back is covered in spots etc. Doc ran some tests last time in and confirmed I am pretty much guaranteed of getting "something bad" now due to some "syndrome" so need regular checks.
Every 6 months I get 2-3 cut out of the back and get tested etc.
Don't delay, get it done regularily, catch it early. The procedure is pretty much painless and quick (and I am shit scared of needles). I get mine done at the doctors surgery (will depend if yours is equipped I suppose).
Slip, slop, slap (I know I know but its from my Gen), get regular checks. Stay safe, look after yourself.
Just had my annual check this afternoon... had a few solar keratoses frozen (as usual), but it's always a relief when nothing more sinister is found.
Mine is in a weeks time
Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.
Had my trip today to a skin cancer specialist. I thought i'd have heaps of burning and cutting coming on the hands, forearms nose and head but it turns out only two will be cut out - on my back. Didn't even know i had them.

I went for my annual check on Tuesday.
I've been clear two years in a row, but no luck this time. Three separate spots of concern, all in the small of my back, where I can't see them.
The frustrating and puzzling thing is that this is an area of my body that hardly ever sees the sun. I probably did get sunburnt there as a teenager. Just one of those things I guess.
So, under the knife in 10 days, then probably two weeks without golf while the damage heals.

My 14 year old son had a large spot cut out of his stomach a few weeks ago. The results were fine, so I guess they are just cutting us up now with any suspicious spots.
Did they do a Punch Biopsy to find out what they are?
I had one removed from my Right Shoulder Blade a few years ago. It was a BCC I think. I have another mole near it now that apparently looks suss, and is going to get removed shortly, thought it will just be done at the Medical Centre. Then I have another couple to get cut out after that.
Effectively, that is what these procedures were.
Results back, and stitches out today.
The good news is that they were only BCC's, which isn't as bad as what the doctor feared, but the bad news is that one of them is 'aggressive' which I think means still growing, so the surrounding tissue has to be removed as well.
So more knife work in a week's time, and more time away from the golf course. I have to decide whether it is worth squeezing in as much golf as I can get this week, or just not bother at all. Probably the latter, as the weather forecast isn't great this week.

Okay no cancers but doc is not happy with my face so getting the METVIX sun activated treatment. Arms need to be better protected so it's the PeteRS look for me.
Had my first BCC out today, love how when I presented the lump a year ago (and demanded it come out) the specialist told me to leave it, low and behold the following year the younger doctor says 'im certain that's a basel'.
Started with a scrape two weeks ago (despite me again asking for stitches) but of course we ended up needing the big removal. Luckily it's a nodular; the least dangerous and no signs of any spread.
Advice I can give you; if you see a lump, demand for it to be completely removed.
Appropriate that this thread has been bumped, as my latest problem has upped the stakes.
My latest annual check has resulted in a proper melanoma, on my shoulder. Consistent with all my previous problem areas, this is an area that rarely sees the sun, and if my shirt ever comes off, sunscreen goes on that area.
It has been caught early, but I still need a 1cm patch around all sides of the spot cut out and examined just to ensure all evil bits have been caught. Then check-ups every three months for a little while.
Quite concerning to me is that this spot was in an area I see in the mirror every night, but I couldn't see a problem. And I thought I knew what to look for.
The message: let the experts check you over, every year.

Best wishes to you both. And yes, timely reminders.
Jim, I assume it is a so called "thin" (less than 1mm) Melanoma? Good catch if so, because they can grow, escalate/penetrate quickly. My Wife and my Daughter were both diagnosed with thin Melanomas just prior to mine being picked up. So far, a few years down the track, no re-occurrence, thankfully. Mine was unfortunately a "Thick" one (penetrated over 4mm). It required surgery to remove. I have been having regular 6 monthly skin checks for over a decade. The so called Skin Cancer specialist dismissed it more than once, and it was only that I insisted it be biopsied (after my GP expressed concern when I asked him about it), that I am alive today. There is more to this story, which I will relate in the future as my treatment progresses.
So I thoroughly endorse regular checks. Mine are every 6 months. Your Doctor will usually recommend a frequency relevant to your risk. And yes they often appear in places that have not seen the sun in decades. I have a Golfing buddy that had a few Melanomas on the Soles of his Feet. After several surgeries he is finally back playing golf after probably 2 years of recovery.

Took my bandage off today, looks like I have been bitten by a shark. I can see why ppl start with the just the shave, to me the scar is a small price to pay for your life.
I am booked in for next Tuesday. Thanks to this thread.
I've been thinking about this lately; I think after getting an email regarding a survey I participated in for people who've had no cancer of any type, including no moles etc frozen or cut.
My mum has had a lot of things cut from her, including a big nasty one from her back years ago. I have quite different skin from her though. Rob's had a few things removed over the years. I've only ever once asked my doc to look at something, which Rob insisted I do, and the doc said it was nothing. Other than that I've never had a skin check before. My mate has them every 6 months and always seems to be having something taken off.
Just lucky I guess, or tempting fate.

I've got an appointment for my 6-monthly in a fortnight. I've had both an SCC & BCC removed previously, but nothing more than keratoses for the last few years. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
An update, just in case anyone stumbles upon this post and wants to know the outcome.
The outcome is good. Surgery number 2 was 13 stitches, and quite painful for a few days. But the results came back clear, so I can enjoy being in the good statistic column rather than the bad statistic column.
