I go every now and again, never had an issue, which surprises me. But then again i have never worked outdoors so i guess that helps. I did get a couple of things cut off when I was about 22, because they were the kind that hada low risk of going bad, but I think that was only because she was trigger happy and I thought she was hot so I let her do it.

One of my colleagues, same age as me gets checked six monthly and comes back looking like Frankenstein. I ain't going to see his doctor.

    Default Skin checks...

I am booked in for my first appointment early next month.

How does it work? Do they generally give you a full check over, investigate areas you raise of concern, or both?

    Both, in my experience.

You played plenty of junior golf though didn't you ?

So unless you played it indoors, i'd expect you may be a candidate as well.

Yep, both. Skin cancer can occur in areas that aren't exposed to sun so you should be checked almost everywhere (scalp, soles, between toes etc).

I have never been checked for skin cancer maybe I should make any appointment. I am on a waiting list to get a lump removed from my eyelid but there was never any mention from the gp or specialist that it might be cancer.

As with any ailment, your GP should be our first port of call. Yes they aren't dermatologists but any GP that has been in the business for some time will have a damn good idea of what he is looking at. Having said that, the comment about identifying the lesion when it's small being like picking a plant from a seedling is very true. It can be very difficult and a biopsy or attempt at excision is usually the best way to get a definitive diagnosis. Besides, you aren't getting to see a dermatologist unless you have a referral from a GP or another doctor first.

I have seen numerous dodgy jobs from these skin alert type places but I have also seen many life saving jobs. It should be a FULL body examination because it doesn't need to be in a sun exposed area to be cancer. If you're concerned, get it checked out! And if you're not happy, insist on a referral to a dermatologist, general surgeon or plastic surgeon. Yep they're expensive but thats the price you pay for piece of mind. Melanoma spreads very rapidly and usually when you end up on my table things are already looking grim, maybe not life threatening, but you can bet your going home a good portion of skin and tissue lighter. Don't delay if you're concerned.

    Cheers

It is nice to see the advanced search function works, as I knew there was a thread for this.

Last week I had my first check since I moved to Ballina. Amazingly, the doctor was trained by the guy I used to see in Campbelltown, and he worked in that practice.

The process was very similar to that described by Nut in the post directly above.

That was the good news. This week I have seven stitches in my neck, and should get to display a good frankenstein scar next week when those stitches come out. Unfortunately those stitches will be replaced by some in my back next week. So there will be no golf for a couple of weeks.

Those affected by the current rain can blame me, because if I can't play golf I can't see why anyone else should. But, it is also a good time to get checked out.

Bumping this thread as I now resemble a grotesque version of Jim's Frankenstein (see Post #33). Unfortunately mine was a Melanoma and a bit of a nasty one. It was in a mole on the back of my neck, and had been there for a while.

I have been getting regular 6 monthly skin checks at a local Mole/Skin scanning practice for probably 10 years. In that time I have had 3 skin cancers removed, all BCCs. My last scan was in April and this mole was there then, but was not picked up as being suspicious. It was in a position where it started to get rubbed by shirt collars etc and was becoming tender and sore, if bumped. I happened to be seeing a GP in late August about something else and asked him to check it. He was pretty concerned about it and said it need to be removed and tested ASAP. I went back to the Mole Scan clinic for a further check and the Scan Doc said it wasn't showing any of the usual signs, but he would remove it to be sure, which happened next day. 2 days later our world crashed down as I got a call (from a nurse, I still have not heard from the Scan Doc!) to tell me it was a Melanoma, and it was a relatively thick and aggressive one. They had made an urgent referral to a Specialist for the following week.

Last Tuesday I was operated on to Wide Excise the area and the relevant Lymph node was identified and removed. Very thankfully, the following pathology indicated that all were melanoma free, which was a huge relief. The down side is a 10cm scar for the excision and about half that size for the Lymph Node, both swollen and still somewhat tight and tender, and my neck is still pretty stiff. I see the Specialist later this week and will learn more about what's next. The Specialist did tell me that about 20% Melanomas do not show up under the usual checks, and mine was one of those.

I had been at my wife to start getting scans down for a few years, and she finally started late last year. At her 2nd scan, a mole was picked up on her arm, and it turned out to be Thin Melanoma. She now has a large scar and gets regular 3 monthly checks.

After her experience, she started nagging our youngest daughter about a mole on her leg. You guessed it! it was a thin Melanoma as well. So we have made the Trifecta so far, but not one you want to win!. Our other 2 kids had their scans last week, and we await results.

I am trying to distill some learnings from all of this: so far I have; 1) you have to get checked; and 2) you have to be vigilant yourself, and in need seek a second opinion, straight away. 3) You also need to know all your family history; it turned out my Mum had a Melanoma removed when I was young. I knew she had had a cancer removed from her back, but didn't know/realise it was a Melanoma. I will post again once I have seen the Specialist.

Wow! Thanks for the post Daves. Good to hear that it your tests have come back with good news.

I'm going to show this to my wife. She keeps saying she is going to go to get checked out but hasn't done anything about it. With her fair skin and a childhood of not wearing sunscreen etc. I think I'll just make the booking for her.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

Thanks all for the best wishes, they are much appreciated.

We saw the Specialist yesterday, and he was happy with the progress and the healing of the Excisions. I am booked to see him again in 6 months. I visited the GP that alerted me about the mole today and thanked him, he potentially saved my life!

I had my first practice round for 2 weeks today, and all went pretty well. My game still suxs, but not as much as I thought it would!

Our kids have all had their checks and all have been cleared, so that was a big positive!

Now that we have had a wake up call, we are now refocused on enjoying our retirement!

If you have not had a skin check, do it now!

If you don't know or are unsure your family history, find out!

    Cheers

    Dave

I had a melanoma identified and removed in 2005 - hadn't penetrated the epidermis but still needed plastic surgery. A lucky find.
    Good luck with your retirement.

Very pertinent thread for me. Just got results back that i have a BCC that needs removing. In line with my nose, just above the line of the eyebrows. Easy to spot, not great for aesthetics.

I had a BCC removed, just left of the nose. Had it removed by a Plastic Surgeon and as for a scar, you can only see it when I get out of a hot shower. Glad that you are okay Dave.

Two pros at the club (under 35) just had suspect spots cut out. One is still fairly serious, other isn’t AS serious.

Definitely time for another check for my family.

This thread made me put a skin check on my todo list a couple of months ago. I had one a few weeks ago, and the doc took one mole out on my forearm that she didn't like the look of, but the tests came back fine.

First world problems are the scab, and probably scar on the arm, and finding a place to take stitches out in Vienna.

Fine form Andy; It's the best way, ive had 4 moles removed and two potential basel cell cut out, all looked very dangerous at the time but all came up benign

Would much rather have a body full of scars than a body with a melanoma or basel cell simply because I was worried about my own vanity

Turns out my wife already made the booking during our last check because the doc has a 3-4 month waiting list.

I often get them frozen and have had a handful cut out over the years. Check up very soon and there's plenty of action i reckon.
