Has anyone tried any of the cheaper rangefinders that are around? Like the mileesey ones you see on eBay and Amazon?I do have a Garmin watch that has golf features on it, and at the Leon day it seemed pretty consistent with what others rangefinders were saying.

I grabbed one of the cheaper no-name brand models from Drummond Golf about three years ago. Touch wood it hasn't missed a beat and seems to be no less accurate than the more expensive rangefinders. Given the relatively limited amount that I play it's not an issue for me that it doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

I got a sureshot one a couple of months ago as I wanted more accuracy than the GPS app. I've been really happy with it so far. It's a somewhat basic one, doesn't have the slope adjustment or vibration or whatever but does a good job. Also handy for seeing how far away the group in front is on longer holes 😅

Slope adjustment isn't allowed in competition play, so it's never been a feature I've looked for. The Nikon rangefinders costco sell for ~$200 are very good; seem to pick up way flags more easily/reliably than my old precision pro.

So are these easier to use than a gps unit, or watch gps?

I think i have had my $300 bushnell for 11 years, so its been a good ROI. I like new shiney things toobut until it carks it theres no good reason to replace it. I suspect the only thing that might kill it is rain, so it might last forever.

Two different things and purposes really, unless you have a combo unit. The typical Golf GPS device or App. gives you front, middle & back, and sometimes hazard distances. The Rangefinder gives you a exact distance to an object (Flag, tree, hazard etc, what ever you point and click it at). On my home course, I rarely need to rangefinder because the GPS plus my local knowledge is usually enough. But on other courses, the Rangefinder comes into its own when you are unsure of carries etc. Normally a GPS is always on during the round and just requires a quick glance to provide the info you want. Whereas a Rangefinder needs to be taken out and pointed etc.

Yeah, that's why I didn't go the more expensive one that has that feature. The majority of rounds I play are comp rounds so it'd be off most of the time anyway.

I actually work the opposite of that. I know where the hazards etc are on my home course, so I am really only interested in the number to the pin.

The only time I use a GPS app is on an unfamiliar course so I can see an overhead of the hole and work out where the trouble is in order to avoid it.

I've had my Bushnell for about 10 years if I had to buy another I wouldn't go any other brand. Didn't have very many warranties/returns on them either in the 8 years I worked in retail.
