I see your point, and yeah I definitely agree that happens a lot of the time. I guess my point is everyone has a different idea on what pace of play should be. I don't think there's ever going to be a blanket answer for it.
I go to the golf course expecting to have fun, hoping to play well, the rest is taken care of. The round takes as long as it takes, it's out of your control.

Fast Play is a state of mind. You do very much have your pace of play under your control. I am usually the low marker in the group and take the role of Group Captain seriously. If anyone starts to lag, I round them up and herd them forward. If they are struggling, I give them a hand. Most clubs will state a target round time and set a max. limit. Unfortunately, very few actually measure and/ or enforce it. There are a few Oz Golfers that will leave you behind if you don't keep up with the rest of the group!
Agree Daves that it is a state of mind to the point that some actual slow players think they play fast.
Just viewing from our own games together with the SA contingent. It has become a lot quicker over the last year just. Personally I think because it has become more social and not focused so much on scores. More about how big the schnitzel is after the game.
Once you go yellow, you will never go back
Another point, if you had 10-12 points on the front and showing (after lets say 3 on the back) no signs of improvement. Play as fast as you can, that means putting out every time etc.
Get out of the way of the players that are having a good scoring round
I have actually been surprised how my play improves when I do this
There is not a lot of correlation between handicap, or total score and pace of play.
Snails are still snails no matter what they are shooting.
I’ve experienced this first hand recently.
I injured my shoulder and have been limited to only playing irons with a restricted swing.
Playing in 2 balls recently, I’ve found myself at the green while my partner would be still be 150-200m away as he was waiting to hit in.
If you play ready golf from that point, you can fly around.
Well I was playing with this guy in the comp today at RQ.
I quipped about how slow the guys were in front of us and that we should right a letter to the president.
He responded
"I am the president"

Pretty good manual from the RandA. Most clubs don't do enough to help pace of play.

Interesting examples. Does seem common that Par 3,s early in a round cause buildups.
At home now we are in groups of 2, 5 min intervals, and we are waiting on every shot. Feels like its taking forever, yet we finish in 3.5 to 3.75 hours

Got around in 3:10 this morning in groups of 3 at 7 minute intervals. We could probably go down to 5 or 6 minute gaps and maintain that.
No idea if it's been mentioned but the course and conditions can have a lot of impact on this.
Parkland course VS links with heavy scrub just off the fairway for example.
Doesn't take many lost balls to slow you down or many from the group in front to slow them down.
Granted, but it's all about individuals not compounding one piece of slow play with another.
Lose a few (not 5!) minutes looking for a ball, then make it up by not doing an OCD pre-putt routine and not having conversations on the next tee, whilst the fairway is clear.
I also find when someone has lost 2 balls, then they spend longer looking for subsequent lost balls, as they've realised the replacement cost of repeatedly losing new balls.
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.
