I like to think I would play most full shots inside 30 seconds because I don't take practice swings or think very much, but I'd be intrigued to see what really happens.
That said, I feel like I've developed a bad habit of standing over putts for a long time (in my mind, really not sure how long I'm taking in reality) and taking 3 or 4 looks at the spot where I want to putt. The longer the putt, the longer I take. I'm going to have to record myself putting now and see if I'm creeping up towards a bloke we call ANZAC because he has a minute's silence before every shot. Did anybody notice it at the Vic Champs?
There's a bloke at my club that I love to play with. He stands behind the ball for a second, grabs a club, takes his stance and goes. Every time. I'll time him next time we play, but he has to be somewhere in the 5-10 second range. He's very consistent too. Whenever I see him play, I'm always reminded of a day at Brookwater when some mates and I were risking finishing after dark, so we made a pact to walk up and hit, no practice swings or stopping over the ball. I played the last 6 holes in 1 over and never hit it better.
I guess if you call out the slow guys you should also mention the good ones. Frank the Tank has a really good efficient putting routine that I would copy if I could.

I always find the more practice swings a player takes, the less likely any practice swings will make a difference to their shot!

8 seconds or 40 seconds over the ball doesn't make a huge difference if people on opposite sides of the fairway ignore each other and hit together. What kills it is when the guy who is slightly closer but completely out of sight line of the guy who is up, waits till the shot lands, then thinks "now where did i put my glove" and starts his 40 second routine, ditto for the other 2. There is way too much inappropriate politeness, including silly things like holding the flag stick (whoever gets there first pulls it and drops it out the way). Its surprising how quick you can be if you dispense with all of the arcane etiquette except that which actually has a direct effect on the quality of your partners shots. Sorry for the rant, I know there are a million threads on this topic but comfortable 3.5 hour Saturday rounds are an easily achievable pipe dream.

It's all about being ready to play your shot after the next player. Read your putt while the other person putts. Take your practice swings whilst the others take their shot. Basically start your routine even before it's your shot.
LL I didn't notice any exaggerated putting routine when we played. Though I was probably to busy reading my putt and getting ready to notice too much.

I could be wrong, but I reckon I'd easily be under 30, practice swing and a line up included. Even after a night on the tiles or "only drinking half a bottle".
That'd be nice. My yips have me completely the opposite. You've got time to order a baked alaska prepared from scratch, eat it, pay for it, then visit the kitchen to pay the chef a compliment by the time I'm done with my 2 footer. Which I missed anyway.
Line up? I tend to think 'the inability to hit it on the perfect line balances out not knowing where the perfect line is'.
Slow play is the result of too many people with Nick Faldo's pre-shot routine and Charles Barkley's ball-striking.

40 seconds is a very long time, as anyone waiting in a queue of traffic will know.
Even though I have never seen Simmsy play, I'll be very surprised if he takes anywhere close to that long to play his shot.
Anyway, we will all have our stopwatch apps on our phones working for our next game, and the next time there is an event on TV. The result will be interesting.
On a related subject (stopwatches ready!) I was astonished to read Jason Day's comments on the subject. Talk about a no-win situation. Even if he genuinely believes he has no responsibility as a role model to other players, he shouldn't say so publicly.
I agree with who say that time over the ball is not a primary reason for slow play. The only exception is those times where the player goes through his full routine, duffs one 5 yards, then goes through the routine again to hit the next shot.

40 seconds x 100 is a lot Simmsy
