We're down the goldie for a week till the 14th. Will see exactly when they say they're replacing the batteries from, because Jas really needs hers done, but we might be earlier than their Late Jan commencement date. But I'll be damned if I wanna pay and extra $30 or $40 to mail it down and back.

Hm, me again! In an apple thread and all!!

So Rob has an original iPad Air and has mentioned for a while that it's feeling a bit long in the tooth. But we certainly had no plans on replacing it. But I heard HN are selling some iPads for $299, I think it's the 2017 iPad (I'm assuming 16gb on board). They have some 32gb's for about $370. This seems a pretty good price, but is it a worthy upgrade?

My daughter just got the new iPad, with a keyboard Case and the Apple pencil, to use at school for more taking etc instead of her 2in1 laptop. Was watching her using it on the couch last night and I thought, "that's actually a pretty impressive setup for what is basically their bottom model tablet". My android tablet is looking in the tooth now and I want to replace it but don't know what with! I didn't really wanna go Samsung, and was gonna stick with the smaller form factor.

Was really thinking about the iPad till I remembered, I have to convert all my media, and use iTunes to put it on there! Are they ever gonna do something about that restrictive antiquated system?

What restrictions are you talking about? I use a similar setup with an iPad with a pencil for note taking and keyboard for typing. Everything you do in this regard is exportable, often automated.

I don't even have to go near iTunes if I don't want to. iOS has become almost standalone in this regard.

I meant with playing media. I don't know if things have changed from what I used to have to do for my kids when they wanted stuff on their iPads.

Apart from browsing I use my tablet for watching media. Not just streaming stuff at home, but also away. I just plug my tablet into my laptop, and transfer whatever tv shows or movies I want to watch onto it. Can you just do that these days on an iPad? I used to have to convert the media into a format Apple could read, and then transfer them into iTunes and then sync the tablet with iTunes to transfer to the iPad.

Do you have a home media server of any description?

I have Plex, which I can then connect to inside the VLC app on iOS, and download into that app. No cables required.

Ahhhh! Yes, I love Plex! I only use the free version; I know with Plex pass I could just download my content with Plex etc, but Plex pass is a bit steep when the only extra feature I'd use is local content storage!

I'll knick Rob's iPad some time and try that out! Big fan of vlc too. That could be a game changer! Rob said she'd give me hell for using an iPad though! May have to live with the ribbing.

Only got a chance to try this on the weekend, Lefty, but brilliant! Thanks for the tip. Worked a treat, and would never have thought of using VLC. Strangely enough, VLC for Android won't allow me to download, not that it's an issue anyway.

Ok, the guy on the phone from Apple was a bit of a pain when it came to answer this yesterday. My son wants the battery in his iPhone se replace. He'll still be using it for a little while. The guy from Apple prattled on forever yesterday, but he did at least point me to the battery health monitor in settings. It put the battery health at 81%. Does that mean it's about time to replace it?

The guy went on about checking usage manner, and apps used etc etc, but good luck getting a decent idea of that from a kid. I'll be in Brissie tomorrow so could get out done then.

    Any clues? Chime in Lefty!

When I got my battery during the last year (under warranty), Apple logged in to the phone and ran all of the diagnostics to check that it was actually eligible for replacement.

This won't be a warranty or replaceable under one of those things. It'll be at our cost.

What exactly are you after? Are you trying to determine if the battery actually needs replacing? It doesn't seem to be an exact science, at least via software. When mine was replaced, I could tell that it was struggling, but the diagnostics indicated that it wasn't that bad.

If you want it replaced, you could just take it to one of those shopping centre places, instead of dealing with Apple.

Well, yes I guess. Apple we a bit of a pain to talk to yesterday (not including the 5 different menus I had to listen to to get to talk to someone!). We could use those cheap kiosk guys, but we've had a couple of things done with Apple phones by a couple before and none have been a good experience. For $75 I'd rather just get it done by Apple. Jasmine's old 6 was done under the warranty thing they had to bring in and out was fine after.

Is it only $75? I have been told it is normally double that via an Apple Store.

Argh, what a pain to talk to. 30 minutes to find out they can't fit us in when I can get there. Told me there's actually a repair agent up here, so rang them and it's $119, as they're not allowed to open the phones and have to send them to Apple.

I may chance one of the shopping centre guys again after all.

Who'd have thunk if spend so much time in this thread.
After keyboard Case suggestions for the new iPad air (same size as the 10.5 Pro) the Logitech one doesn't seem to have a cover that folds behind our of the way, and doesn't look like it would be that great to use on your lap. The Apple smart keyboard for that size isn't as nice as for the larger pro's; offer read the cover can wear out a bit and it doesn't protect the back of the iPad. But it looks like it would be ok used on a lap.

Anyone seen, or have something different that's worth a look at?

    Me again!

I'm playing around using Rob's old iPad air, but I have a query about the keyboard. Everything I've read says that since ios11 the keyboard has a one handed mode. The same goes for gboard keyboard. But I can't get either to activate. Would love to be able to shrink it to the left hand side of the screen. It's running ios12.something. anyone got any clues?
