Checking in to record one of the worst ones I've ever hit.
On our 135m 5th hole I almost reverse hoseled a 6 iron into a spot I not only have never been before, but I've never been within 30 metres of that place. As I said to my playing partners when I eventually caught up, its never a good hole when you don't get to take your glove off.
Thankfully, there weren't any others, although the very next hole required a nerve-wracking 6 iron shot.
"There are 50 things to remember in the golf swing. Trouble is that I can only remember 49 of them" - Bob Hope.
2 each in the last couple of rounds.
Snuck that in there! I'd make a smart arse comment, but in my month of crappy golf, I executed 1 shank - it happened to be the best one I have ever hit.
Peregian Springs - Par 3 12th. Over the lake playing approx 145. Wind was howling, figured a knock down 5i would be the trick.
Eased the club through the hitting zone, hosel first, seeing the ball starting 45deg right, curling further right on the wind. Playing partners confirmed no splash, so i expect it would have gone 35m right - of the initial line of 45deg right - quite possibly 80m sideways with 40m of advancement. The reload sailed the green as there was no knocking down on that hit.
It's seems like a can't get through a round with a couple of hosel rockets with 2 in sat round and 2 today.
Started the day by hitting a stinger 3 wood off the tee straight down the middle. Others might call it a toppy . Anyway had 6i into the green for my second and hit a pretty good half hosel rocket. Easy bump and run to about 15feet and then canned the putt for par .
Bombed drive down 3, had 5i in this time and this one was even more of a rocket. Managed to save bogey to be 2 over after 3 with 2 shanks.
Played the rest of the way at even par for probably my best round of the year!!!
After getting a birdie on the 5th hole, I stepped up to the tee on the 6th( par 3 170m)
Didn't get my backswing where I was hoping but continued anyway.
Result was dead centre of the hosel but ended going straight about half way.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.
How come my shanks don't land 10m off the green??
Well, the one I'm aiming at anyway.

Calling Peppas!
Have to confess a reverse shank of a 3 wood at Grange East during the Champs.
The shaft after the fact had a fair bend in it too but didn't go snap.
Witnessed an attempted wedge at Mt. Osmond on the Saturday, hole 18b from memory.

I had a period there for 3-4 months that it wasn't a "normal round" if I didn't throw in a shank, scull or blade from inside 100m
AHHHHH GOOD TIMES....
"SHANKS FOR THE MEMORIES"
Mine do, or at least the one I slipped in at Mt Osmond to cost me the SA Champs.
Mind you I was only 10m away from the last green at the time and concentrating hard to save my bogey (and two vital points) after having duffed a previous chip. After the hosel got in the way I was still 10m away, but in a bunker I really didn't want to be in. A possible 3 points became a devastating wipe. At least I got a hug from Peppas.

Hi,
This is a true story.
In 1996, a local paper in Adelaide called the Sunday Mail had a competition where you advised your ticket # for the SA Ford Open at Kooyonga Golf Course to play in the Pro-Am with GREG NORMAN.
A girl rang my home and my wife answered, asked if I was available and was advised I was at work. The girl from the Sunday Mail advised my wife I'd won the competition, she said when the Pro-Am was and my wife promptly said:
I'm sorry he can't play as he'll be working doing wages, the girl from Sunday Mail said WHAT, my wife promptly said, it's OK, we'll do the staff wages the night before.
On the day, the group was Greg Norman, Graham Ingerson (SA Minister of Tourism), Geoff Roach (journalist) and me. Graham, Geoff and I were all single figure handicappers so we were interested in our own games and playing well, it was my first ever game at Kooyonga GC and I had about 6 3 putt greens, they were so fast.
Anyway, back to the topic. During the previous few years, I'd suffered bad from the shanks, mainly short irons and especially the SW and my usual golfing buddies WOULD NEVER STAND ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE in front of me just in case I shanked it.
On the 18th hole, I'd hit a great drive leaving about 110 metres to the pin and with the hole doglegging to the left, I couldn't get comfortable with my alignment.
About to take the club away, I had a last look at the pin and caught a glimpse of Greg walking in front of me ON THE RIGHT, club came back to the ball and big shank, missed Greg by about 2 metres head height, he glanced back with a dirty look.
Ball ran across the practice putting green, hit the club house, ricocheted back across the practice green and finished up against the temporary fence, free drop.
Ken Russell who caddied from Graham was a Kooyonga member and asked me to come back on Monday to have another game while the course was in championship condition, I gladly accepted.
Got to the 18th hole, hit another great drive that finished in a similar spot to the Pro-Am and guess what, another shank that ran across the putting green, hit the club house, went into the rose bushes and I never saw it again.
A day I'll always cherish and remember. My caddy was Bruce Lindner who played for Geelong and as he was doing work at Channel 7, was able to get their photographer to take some nice photos and give to me.
BTW, after playing Kooyonga in 1996 it became me favourite golf course and I was lucky enough to join in May 2016.

Slug almost killed a guy on that practice green at kooyonga playing the 18th as well. True story. Ball landed about 2ft from where the guy was standing on that green.
Sluggo then proceeded to get up and down from there for par. What a player!
