The 26th anniversary Pro-Am at the Mundubbera Golf Club was today recognised in a way that nobody had ever expected. After leading the 40 strong field of Professionals after day one of the event with a 6 under par 62, Brisbane based Professional Michael Wright let fly with a Course, Tournament, State, National and maybe even International Record of 58 including 11 birdies and a solitary bogie.

The golf grape vine had done its job and word was out as Wright stood over a 20 metre chip shot on the last, the par 3, 18th hole. As all good fairytales end Wright chipped it in, to send all historians diving into the record books.

The 10 under par round of 58 had been achieved and the Norm Wallace Trophy in the bag.
(The Norm Wallace memorial is a $1000 bonus for the leading professional of each years Ellendale Open).

Runner up in the event New South Welshman Steven Jeffress, can feel a little disappointed as he equalled the previous Tournament record of 11 under, set by Chris Downes only to come up 5 shots short.

The Queensland Sunshine Tour heads to Club Pelican Course on Tuesday for the $30,000 Pro-Am which includes a small Seniors event before driving to Townsville for the first of two Von Nida Tour events The Queensland Masters at The Willows.

On second thoughts, I just looked up the details of Mundubbera GC.

9 Holes (so no surprises the second time round), 5490m total and an ACR of 64.

That takes some of the shine off it.
A 58 still would look good on a score card.

I have to agree with Andy that playing a coarse that is less than 5500 metres,where obviously you will be hitting chip shots(anywhere from 30 metres to greenside....this distance is these guys bread and butter) to most of the par 4's rather than mid irons and I would say what ever par 5's are there are easy reached.

This coarse is over 1000 metres shorter than Brookwater and 800+ metres less than Indro West...Say no more.

You all know how much easier it is when you play a coarse like McLeod as aposed to one of the above and Mcleod is no where near as short as this one.Sorry Andy but you proved this theory.

The pros going from a standard length coarse to this one, is like the rest of us going from our home coarse to a pitch n putt.

Maybe the reason the coarse record wasn't that low is that there wasn't enough prize money to woe the top pro-am pro there.

Even though this is only my opinion,i think its a pretty solid argument.

Hey Jarro, I think the course record around Wynnum is 62 (I could be wrong). Would need to shoot a 60 to be comparable. Possible I guess, but not an every day occurrence! I'd wager the greens at Wynnum are a little more predictable though...

My posts never state that it was a bad score, I think it is a great score.
I stated that by looking at the details of Mundubbera course takes "some of the shine off" the score. Shooting a round of 58 here is not the same as a 58 at Royal Melbourne.

Regardless of length, it is the ACR which is supposed to determine the difficulty of a course.

Andy, to me McLeod is a snack after playing Indro all the time and places like brooky, even though I didn't cut it in the "AP Cup"

I just find it heaps easier when I'm hitting 52,56 and 60 degree wedges into greens rather than 8 iron to 3 irons.

What's the par/ACR/yardage at City GC these days. I always thought it was pretty short, but very tight.

I guess my point is that a course doesn't need to be long to be tough.
