Only ever used regular unleaded. My car runs just fine on it.

whenever i did the simple maths it seemed to me that the relative performance gains do not outweigh the extra cost.

I initially did my comparison costs when I was delivering pizzas and keeping a log book, so I had plenty of data. I know it wouldn't stack up now, but I fear going back to an "inferior" fuel, that also has Ethanol.
Even the fuel tank has a sticker recommending Octane 95 as a minimum.

    Andy
I wouldn't advise anybody to use fuel which has ethanol in it. Advice I was given was to stay away from it as it may harm your motor in the long term. Ethanol is a grain based fuel which absorbs moisture (which is why it causes problems in two-stroke engines). Anything that Bob Katter recommends is a red rag to me to stay away from.

Then PULP is your only hope. Ethanol is shit.

As an aside, I own a 6 speed auto BF Falcon. Since ethanol has been legislated into our fuel (thanks NSW Govt), my consumption has gone from 9.9l per 100lm to 10.8 around town.

I have gone back to PULP and getting back towards 9.9 again.

thats the same advice i was given. Except that the person who advised.me got that advice from someone else.

I do not know which position the scientific data supports, all I have ever heard is hearsay.

Dad is a 40 year mechanic. Some engines have no problem with Ethanol fuel. Others don't.

A friends last model Laser crapped itself 3 months after she started using Ethanol based fuel as it was cheaper.

Time to ask the expert - Mike?

I'm glad I have a work car and don't have to worry about this stuff.

Our company cars are commodores, and while great on the highway they are very very sluggish around town when using the ethanol blended juice.

The price difference is more than performance boost from higher octane fuels.

It doesn't stackup money wise unless you take into account the cost of buggering up your engine.

Yes, there is that. But the price difference is also because only regular unleaded gets some sort of discount via the government or something.

The higher octane fuels have more energy per litre and in theory your fuel consumption should improve by a percent or 2. My car demands 98, so no choice in what I put in. Have had issues with ethanol in my boat, and I have never knowingly bought the stuff! Seems you can get ethanol even if it isn't disclosed.

Just for a comparison for the US prices it was US$3.71 a gallon in LA on Friday. That is for 87 octane. They go up from there to 89 & 92. The 92 was just under $4.

wow, that's gone up. 10 years ago in the USA it was still roughly $1 a gallon. Yet they still haven't embraced small cars?

Over $1.50 a litre everywhere down here. What are other Ozgolfers paying?

And what the @#$% does the Petrol Commissioner Joe Dimasi do to earn his $330k a year (set up when Rudd was PM)?

Portland was $1.489 when I filled up on Monday. So if Jack's gone to $1.50 since then we'd have to be at around $1.549 I would guess. Will have to check it out.
