But the number of people that I have never met in person that want to add me or look at my profile is quite bemusing seeings I am a nobody in the context that i do business with scientists. Does anyone really use this to check out a persons professional profile?

In a word - hell yes. (I know, that's two)

From linked in alone, I have 8 job offers alone since January, as well as expanded my network to the point where at least my name is well known where I want it to be.

Having said that, my industry relies very very heavily on networking, and is quite a personable one.

I would recommend getting involved in it as much as possible. Forget Facebook, twitter and all the other BS, as a professional, this is the networking tool you need.

Cinemas putting on 'babes in arms' sessions of M rated movies.

Assuming you're talking about Oblivion? My BIL is now a house husband and went to see it this week with his 10 month old son. Kid spent most of the session crawling all around the front section of the cinema, in front of all the seats. Slept the last 30 minutes. Only two other mothers in the session.

And he's off to Ironman 3 today with the little tucker. Has a spare ticket, but funny enough can't find anyone free to go with him.
