Jono, heat the tip and clamp the tip weight in a vice. After it's clamped, just twist the shaft and out they come. Done it many times.

If they are recessed and not protruding, screw a threaded screw into the tip, heat the tip, then do the above.

Chappy - have trawled back through this thread looking for your preferred method of removing old & installing new grips. Can you give us a quick run down of your method or a video of you do it? Cheers

Hi CeeAy, I'm a big fan of compressed air and a grip gun for grip removal and installation.
Installing is a piece of cake with a air and a grip gun, I just coat the build up tape on the tip with hair spray, a little spray inside the tip of the grip, then push on with the help of air. Will stick like $h!t to a blanket.

Removing them with air can be anything from a 2 second job to a royal pain in the A$$. If the existing grip was installed with the above method, a good jolt of air will in most cases get it off in a few seconds. It's very import that you use a sleeve over the top of the grip when removing, in case of a blow out. I use a 30 cm length of 40 mm flexible conduit for the sleeve, works a treat. If the grip is fixed using double sided tape or grip tape, you may have a tougher time. At this point there a 2 courses of action, if you have no use for it, cut the damn thing off and save yourself some time. if you intend on using the grip again then, I typically do the following, grab yourself a gardening or riggers glove (will save all your skin on your hand). I peel the lip of the grip back as far as I can and spray WD40 between the inside of the grip and the shaft in a couple of places, leave the club grip down for 5 mins. Clamp it in a vice with your rubber grip guide and start with the compressed air, with the riggers glove on your other hand, start to twist the grip from the bottom, couple of cms at a time until that part of the grip has loosened, then move up the grip and repeat. Within a minute or 2, working your way up the grip, you will get the damn thing off.

Have used this method (double sided/grip tape) many times and have approx 80% success rate, with out grip tape 100% success rate.

CeeYa if I have a club at home that is stuck on with grip tape I'll take a video and post it for you.

Hope this is clear and that it helps
    Peace

Hi Chappy - thanks for the reply! With regard to the build up tape, do you use normal masking tape or something different?

For me, at least initially I’d be replacing grips that were already worn so I’d most likely cut it off, however thanks for the detailed run down of both methods. The only other question I really have is do you change the build up tape every time or if it looks in ok condition just put the new grip on over the top as you described above?
If you get a chance to do a video that would be fantastic!
    Cheers

It should be said if you are cutting grips off graphite shafts be very careful not to nick the shaft with the stanley knife.

The other old school method I was taught for removing grips is a syringe full of petrol injected at the butt end. Then work the petrol to the bottom of the grip to release the bond.

Personally I would redo the masking tape. I recently had perfectly good looking tape let go a few days after regripping a driver. Clean off the old remnants of glue with metho or similar and start again.

Or use a hook blade in your Stanley knife.

    Advice needed:

A friend found an Adams Super LS 15 degree hybrid head at a garage sale and picked it up for $1. Reason for the price was that the graphite shaft appears to have snapped (or someone attempted to pull it very badly) right at the hosel. I said that I should be able to drill out the remains of the shaft for him, but about 5ml deep I hit what seems to be a metal tip weight but that doesn't seem to make any sense to me (as there would have been almost no actual shaft inside the hosel.

A - any ideas of what this might be? and
B - any suggestions on how to get it out?

Have you tried heating the hose then pliers and pulling it out?
I’d drop acetone into the hosel till it’s really soaked then get pliers or try drill it out?

I take that back (having now seen it on-line) - completely impossible to see!

Tried heating with a butane torch, but no cigar. Tried drilling it, but hit the metal and stopped. Hadn't thought of acetone though - good suggestion.

Just fill the whole hosel up with it...
I’ve had a few of these situations, be patient it will eventually come out....

Take II with photos (still not easy to see - the metal is just visible, and is literally just below the top of the hosel):

Getting rid of the old shaft should be fine, but I'm still confused what the metal tip would be. Will try acetone and see what happens - can't hurt at this point!

Could be a brass tip weight Stuart.

I'd try and put a screw into it, heat it, after the heat, secure the screw in a vice and try and leaver it out

Thanks - will try that if the acetone doesn't work.

I agree that it is probably a tip weight, but what I don't get is that there would literally be only a few mm of the actual shaft inside the hosel. Actually, perhaps that might explain why the graphite shaft broke in that way. Wonder who on earth did that work.

    Wanting a hybrid shaft for a few ping G hybrids @ .355 tip #2 & #3 Question is a utility/iron shaft the same as a hybrid shaft? What’s the difference? Thinking I need a 85gm S flex fwiw!
