I'm reshafting a set of irons for the first time. All going well but I've noticed there were tip weights installed (in factory presumably) in the original 7-9 iron shafts. Is it safe to assume those weights are to counteract variances in the head weight, rather than the shaft and I should reinstall them in the corresponding new shafts to get a consistent swing weight (all other things being equal).

I wouldn't imagine petrol would do anything good either. Most just avoid the practice based on risk vs reward. Some do it long term with no problems.

Guessing the years sniffing the fumes out the back of the pro shop has finally caught up with me! Seen a few grips blow up in faces. Best way to repair them is these days is just give it to a clubmaker.

so many variables to mention best to weigh individualy and find out. Take care when removing the weights.

I'm not going I go crazy getting the swing weight completely perfect. My game isn't good enoug to notice a point or two either way and the SW changes due to new shafts and grips etc should be manageable.

I would just prefer the SW is relatively consistent through the set and was interested if anyone could tell me if it was likely the tip weights were due to variances in the shafts or heads. I've got some pretty sensitive regular scales (no SW scale though) so I might just weigh the components and reinstall the tip weights only if the tolerances are out.

    Thanks for the advice.

It's generally the heads that have the weight variances. I have installed NV105 graphite iron shafts, and PX 5.5 iron shafts, and they were all within 1g of what they should be.

I put the NV's in some Nickent heads, and the PW weighed as much as the 8i, needed about 14g of lead tape to swingweight.

All you need is a cardboard roll/pvc tube etc to stop any chance of it blowing up dangerously.

if you ever get the chance spend some time with a club fitter. You can swing weight anything its the dead weight that is often overlooked in OEM products. If the club feels good to you thats the key just hit it.

I'm looking at getting a Graphite Design AD-DI 7S but it has a Taylor Made R1 tip on it.
Will it be possible to put a Titleist tip on it?

I'm trying to Google the tip size and it seems like Taylor Made are .350 and Titleist is .335 - is that correct?

The AD DI shafts are 0.335' only. TM typically uses 0.350" stock shafts, but you can get 0.335" TM adaptors.

    Stupid question of sorts...

I heard a soft, yet abnormal, sound on impact when I hit my driver (R11) this arvo...quick creaking type of sound. Used it once more and didn't hear it.

Bit of Googling indicates that it's most likely a poor epoxy bond. I can't see anything around the ferrule that looks like the shaft's cracking or splintering, plus from experience when it breaks at the hosel it's somewhat sudden. Head looks fine and nothing rattling inside.

Is it something that I can just put a heat gun to for a moment or 2 or should I reglue it? It's a tour issue all metal adapter so no need to worry about melting.

Don't put the heat gun on it for a short time whatever you do. If in doubt reglue. When you twist the head firmly do you get ay noise?

Only my knuckles, TNO. I gave it a twist out on course as well as just a minute or 2 ago and no noise from the head end.

Ok. Either monitor on course or reglue. I'd comtemplate a reglue if it's a favourite head or high level shaft. 5-10 minute job.

Might get the cult hero, Virge or the club builder at my course to have a squiz at it...

I wouldn't say that the New Blue is high end (well, it ain't high end compared to a TP7HD), but the head is certainly a favourite.

Hit it half a dozen times today during my round and didn't hear the sound.

I did adjust the ASP from closed to neutral when I did the twist so maybe that was a little loose.

Did you end up using Araldite in this instance (it was beginning of October) and if so, how did the bond go? I have some 5 minute stuff at work and not sure if I'll be wanting to use it to glue my Covert tips to shafts.

If not, I might come visit later in the week.

I have 5 shafts that I use regularly that are all done with araldite, never had a problem. But use the 24hr stuff. I used the 5 min stuff on my putter with out a drama but its not a driver.

Not yet. I think one of the boys use 5min stuff and they say to have everything ready to go and only do 1 or 2 clubs at a time.
