    Default Jono's balloon balls ...

    ... and I hate'em.

I'm swinging with club clubhead speed, good ball speed but way too much backspin. Got on the Achiever couple of days ago and hit a few drivers. Ball speed maxed out at 180mph but spin was up around 4500 rpm. It needs to be down near 2500 to 3000 rpm.

I don't hit down on the driver. I get good launch angle but the problem is that it keeps on climbing up.

I'll try to get some swing videos on my high speed camera later on the weekend. What's the best way to cut down spin with the driver? And no two syllable word answers starting with "N" and ending in "K" please.

I'm similar in terms of numbers as well mate, and I can't do it consistently enough at all, but one thing I know that does work (for me anyway) is making sure I have my weight well over my front foot at impact, and swinging from the hips for want of a better explanation. Because i cant do it consistently, I've gone the nunchuk route, which has helped heaps, but I can't tell u the numbers cause I haven't checked it again.

What are your current driver specs?

    What is your launch angle?

Release type can add spin, if you flip it at all it will go high.

Catching it middle to low on the face? If you are swinging up on the ball and not catching the upper part of the face, the extra gear effect will add extra spin.

    Hit it lower.

If your spin is 4500, your spin loft is much too high. So either, you are flipping and adding excess loft, or hitting down with too much loft.

Original Speedline 8 degree with 55g x flex Accra tipped 1 inch.Launch angle is around 12 degrees.I probably am flipping it. I'll do a video and see.

8 deg launching at 12....unless you are hitting it high on the face or the ball is teed stupid high and forward you are flipping it....possibly due to the lack of loft for a start.

I got told by the great flipper that I flip worse than him.

Saw some moonballs in action today from Jono, quite impressive!

Yep, I tee it high. Whether it is stupid high, it's a matter of opinion, I think. Trackman results have shown that hitting the ball on the way up will yield the higher distance. The trick is to do so with less spin. There's nothing wrong with launching an 8 degree driver at 12 degrees. Doing so with 4500 rpm is the problem. Into the wind, my driver climbs almost vertically. I want to have a wind cheating, high launch low spin drives.Anyway, I'll take some videos and see exactly how much flippingis going on...

Jono To keep the ball down with the driver , the ball has to be hit without disturbing the tee. Tee it as high as you like but don't touch the tee.

Funny you say that. I remember watching Moe Norman hit drivers without disturbing the tee. He used to hit drivers off coke bottles ... I think I would be in trouble if I did that.

Now explain this too me. If I want to hit the ball with a deep face driver, and hit it on the centre or slightly higher on the clubface, wounld' I be hitting the top half an inch of the tee as well? Pretty hard to leave the tee undisturbed then?

Are you absolutely sure you don't hit down on it?

    Flipping is extremely likely.

Regardless of trends one of the first things you need to do is change from that 55 grammer. With your SS and problems you need more weight in a tip stiff shaft to get a good barometer. What model Accra? The original Speedline is a pretty high spinning head.

Heads like the i15 and S9-1 Pro D are extremely low spin but like center contact to show their true mojo. Tip stiff shafts are plenty now and i'd be looking in the 70 to 80 gram bracket for a trial if i were you.

Heavier shafts often quiet a hasty transition and help control and spin.

I was under the impression that you wanted to hit your driver with a lower ball flight. That's one way of doing it - striking the ball lower on the clubface. This will give a penetrating flight into the wind. I doubt that you will be able to do it with your swing though, because it is way too loose and the wrists are too active. The feeling is one of keeping the wrist action to a minimum(bordering on stiff) and the arms staying in sync with the body turn (the butt end of the grip pointing at the belly button well into the takeaway). It should feel like the backswing is short and stiff wristed, where in reality it will be near to your normal swing.

That should be a challenge for you, Jono.
