Default How do you play the 5th hole at Pelican Waters?

Playing at 349m (black), 334m (blue), 301m (red) The Passage, a gem of a par 4 is not long by any stretch but ranks #4 on both indexes. Even without breeze you are tested with a drive from the back door of former Parramatta coach John Monie's house, with water all the way down the left hand side. Fairway bunkers along the right are around the 220m & 250m. Any ball finding these bunkers will force almost anyone bar the brave to lay up short of the water carry 60m short of the green.

The approach to the green really only has short/right as an available miss. Anything on the left will find the drink, and a large bunker on the right will leave you with a potential testical shrivelling shot with water waiting to swallow anything caught thin.

This hole has killed off many a OZgolf champs round and will be sure to do so again. So how do you plan on tackling The Passage?

That bunker on the left has saved me a few times.

Champs is a stab event right? Drive in water = open beer, second shot water = drink beer and watch the other 3 finish the hole, easy hole really

Saturday: lasered a 3wd to the centre of the fairway. Hit the approach a tiny bit chunky & it landed short & rolled to the edge of the water. I attempted to chip it onto the green but only succeeded in double hitting it & spraying mud all over my lovely white daks. Finished with a wipe.

Sunday: hit the 3wd well again but with a bit of a pull. Carried the left trap and finished a metre from the water. Put the approach on and 2 putt for an easy 3 pointer.

I came off my driver NTP on the 4th into this hole last year (Sunday) and pulled out a rare pull to find the water left and had to reload. Regulation par on the Saturday, up and down for a double on the Sunday.

I'll take driver off the tee both days to be short of the first trap, and won't be taking any sort of brave line on the approach. I'd take a 5, while giving myself a chance at the 4.
Driver does not leave me short of the traps from the blues, so I had to take them on. Nearly got up and down for a 4 on day 1, settled for a 5; three good shots for a birdie 3 on day 2. It went some way towards erasing some bad memories from that hole.

Day 1 - drive just past bunker in middle of fairway and then hooked a wedge into the water, go to drop zone chip/ putt for bogey.
Day 2 - big drive past bunker on right of fairway, sand wedge to 2 metres then miss birdie putt, tap in par

Day 2 - 3 wood, pitching wedge to less than a foot, birdie for 5 points.

Sat - driver tee shot pulled into the piss, reload just short of the 2nd RHS bunker, 4th slightly fat short right of green, chip and putt for 6/1 (I think).
Sun - 18* hybrid in left rough, caught a flyer with my PW approach into back bunker, 3rd attempt ( ) out of bunker over the green and half submerged in piss Bill Haas style, attempt to hole shot for 1 point fails miserably with Oxy et al in fairway yelling "get in the hole" as my weaksauce attempt goes all of 2 or 3 metres.

Day 1.. Driver in this piss left, drop, fat 6 iron into piss short right, drop, almost chip it in - 6/1
Day 2.. 3 iron to fairway, 8 iron to 20ft easy 2 putt par. 4/3

Fun hole. After playing it , pretty safe to assume it would be a &*^$ of a hole from the back tee's with a bit of cross wind.

Sat. Driver, 7 wood, 2 putt = Par
Sun. Driver, 7 iron to soft hazard edge, splat out short of green, chip, 2 putt = Double

    I hate playing irons.

The Unit wins this by a mile: two crap tee shots for two pars. Nobody else came close.
