Cheers boys, will only be doing 1 subject this semester due to full time work commitments then change to part time work and Full time study next year

Coffs thanks for the input, UniSA specifically has a 'generic' first year for ALL engineering degrees so changing to your specific preference after year 1 should be a cinch.. It not only allows an easy change with no loss of time but also gives you a broader perspective of most of the big engineering degrees.

    Cant wait to get started.

Andy, im sure ill agree with you next year with 4 subjects and sweet FA spare time

If you put the effort in away from the lectures, you should get the rewards. Or you could do the bare minimum like I did, cram, fail a few subjects and just come out the other end with a degree.

This has been a great thread as my son is currently doing year 11 and aiming for Mech Eng. He is currently doing 4 math and 1 physics subject and thinks they are easy (strange boy). The insights have been very helpful.

My brother did a Chem Eng degree with Honours back in the day and then fell into IT and has been there ever since. Never once used all that Chemistry stuff, but never been out of work either.

Reviving and old thread! Ian, did your son end up getting into engineering? 8 years later I've graduated and am 3 years into my new profession. Amazing how time flies. Never too late to start a new career.

But is it a happy ending?

My engineering life has certainly changed since 2011. I went from being a paper engineer in a big company to being a lot more hands on, and less specialised at smaller companies. It's a lot more satisfying now.

I'll finish my current offshore engineering role in 2 and a half weeks. Best job I have ever had, so I'd consider it a happy ending.

I did a trade and then uni and 18 years engineering. My happy ending was going back to my trade 10 years ago.

I'm in Building services so primarily HVAC design and project management. It's a good job and the company is good. Learning more all the time and the skills are transferable.

It's just a term for a desk bound engineer dealing with documents all of the time. My current office is near a Spicers though.

    Hey Flavzz,
He ended up getting in to Aerospace Engineering at Monash and is currently in fourth year. The math seems pretty extreme to me but means that he is making good money tutoring year 11 & 12 students in Math subjects in his spare time. He tells me that it enables him to not get rusty in the simple math

Yes, he is doing aerospace engineering and has about 6 months to go. Took a couple of gap years to travel.
