    Default Out-of-the-ordinary local rules

What are some of the strange local rules you have come across?

Here is some that were listed in my clubs newsletter:

You thought you were a tough weather golfer. This notice was posted in war-torn Britain in 1940 for golfers with a stiff upper lip.

German aircraft based in Norway would fly regular missions to Northern England. Because of the icy weather conditions, the barrels of their guns had a small dab of wax to protect them. As they crossed the coast (often over Richmond Golf Course) they would clear their guns by firing a few rounds. Golfers were urged to take cover. You have to admit, these guys were dedicated.

I think once upon a time at Mareeba if you hit a kangaroo it was a 2 shot penalty.

    Killing one was DQ.

Not sure now, I'll check the local rules next time I'm there.

Toowoomba G C, Keperra G C pre 1940's (some greens were enclosed to keep out livestock):

If a ball be within 20 yadrs of the green enclosure and on being played to that green strike a post, strut or wire of the enclosure, the ball must be placed in a similar lie and replayed without penalty.
A ball obstructed by a post or strut as above within 20 yards may be placed in a similar lie not more than four yards to right or left, but no nearer the hole.
'Wet manure hazard' - if a ball should land in wet manure, it may be lifted and cleaned then dropped no nearer the hole.
Consciousness and awareness - awareness is being aware of what is happening and being aware of what is happening within ourselves while we are conscious. Where did I leave my glasses?

Kramback NSW still has those exact same local rules, including the cow pat one.

You can see all the greens are square, cos its pretty hard to make fences round.

Yep, I was going to post about it as well, but couldn't find any photos. Not far from my home town and have driven past it many times.

I played there quite a few times when I lived in Tuncurry, and had one round with the owner. The golf course is on a portion of his grazing land, he built the course by hand around 1970(i think), and his agreement with the club is that the cows can graze there from time to time, hence the fences. He still did all the fairway and greens mowing himself, and at the time was in his 70's. That was 14 years ago, so I wonder what that situation is now

There was a rule at a course in Brissy > near Aspley somewhere.

The hole required you to Tee off down a fairway which some lowish power lines ran across diagonally. Needless to say, going fairly well in the Junior tourney at the time i decided to take a 3 wood of the tee for safety (OB Left).

Hit the first ball, smack into the power lines, replay the ball, 1 penalty stroke
Hit the second, caught it a little out of the toe, hit the power lines, replay the ball, 1 penalty stroke.
Hit the 3rd, steam coming from the ears at this point, reaping duck hook, into the houses left, OB - snapped the 3 wood over the knee, walked off.

Looking back i remember what a bad tempered little turd i was as a junior

What was the rule? Your story does not say what it was.

Hitting power lines is always compulsory replay of shot no penalty. OTOH this is a standard local rule in the appendix to the rules.

Very strange if aspley contradicted that

What Blakey said; penalty strokes for hitting power lines is a bit rough.

Cannot be. A club cannot make a rule like that. It is against the rules to do so

You were a bad tempered junior, the fact is you didn't have a clue what the rules were, so you assumed it was a penalty and paid the consequences for not knowing what the rules were.

Similar local rule I came across playing junior pennant years ago in country victoria.
Local rule was if you hit the power lines it was a compulsory re-load. No penalty however.

I have vague recollections of powerlines being in-play on one of the par 5s at Nudgee (North), although I can't remember what the rule was if the ball hit them.

I think it is a common enough rule to be considered off-topic.

    Re-play at Nudgee and Nambour.

The same rule was at the oaks in Cessnock.

Old Wife's tales abound about so and so who aced the hole after hitting the lines, only to have to replay the hole.
