Default Moving to Newcastle - which golf club should I join??

Looking very likely that I am packing the family at the end of the year and head to Newcastle.

That means I have to find a new home for my clubs.

Would anyone out there be able to suggest golf clubs where I could join?

Looking at the area map there seems to be a lot of options but looks can deceptive.

If it was me it would be Newcastle 1st choice by the length of the straight.

How much do you want to spend on Membership. If funds permit Newcastle by the length of the straight.

As long as there isn't a huge joining fee, i'll spend around $1500/year

Minor Threat or Andrew should be able to give you details on how much etc it is per year. MT joined in the last couple of years so his info should be relatively modern or up to date.

    Hey Oxy..
The best course in the Hunter district is Newcastle GC located at Fern Bay (next to Stockton). This is where I am a member. From memory the current 7 day member fees are about $1500, however the club also has a "member green fee" which means every game you play social or comp incurs a green fee. This is $8 for 9 holes and $16 for 18 I think (Sorry I don't really pay much attention to what I am paying).

I am unsure if there is currently a joining fee as they have removed that information from the website www.newcastlegolf.com.au

Other clubs in the area that I would consider:
    - Belmont
    - Waratah
    - Toronto

Do you know where in Newy you are going to be living?

You wouldn't consider any of the Nelson Bay options, MT? (I think Oxy is looking to live up that way)

Wherever you join up, Oxy, it's got no chance of topping Wally Park.

Yes you can pay a "pre-paid" green fee which from memory is about $900. Last time I worked it out, you need to play about 27 holes a week to break even.

I should add that Charlestown is also a good option or Nelson Bay if you are up that way!

Newcastle is about No12 in Australia (in fact the best course in Australia north of NSWGC), the next best would be about No 100! But you pay for the privelege. Newcastle is a big place so look where you want to live first and then work out how far you are willing to drive. Stockton is 25 min north of the city. Other lesser courses but reasonable value would be Shortland Waters (Steelworks), Belmont, Charlestone or Merewether!

Waratah is the only course in Newcastle that I have played and if it is worthy of consideration I would go out of my way to join NGC. Very average.

The basis for that consideration is mainly on green condition and the members, the layout is certainly nothing special.

We will most likely end up in the city around the Hamilton South area, love to be in Merewether.
It's not too far to Newcastle Golf Club.
All depends what houses are available end of the year.
We did consider buying in Nelson Bay but have gone off the idea. City living it is.
Good for son's schooling as well.

Hamilton is nice as it Merewether, depends what you are looking for really. Beaches or City? It would take no more than 20 mins to Newy GC from either location.
