Usually that shot is caused by the hips outpacing the shoulders and arms through contact. A straight shot or a straight draw has the hips, shoulders and arms in sync during the downswing and through impact. It is as if his transition is too forcefully leading to a timing issue where he doesn't have time to square up the clubface. The contact he is after is shut to open which requires time to shut the clubface at impact and leave the divot open. Not many tour players have open to shut contact on normal shots.
