Now that telstra have aproved 2.2, if it does have 2.1 on it then once you've installed the pc software an upgrade to 2.2 should be available. It may arrive with 2.2 though. Then it just depends how far you want to take it.
First thing to test. Have the phone switched off. Then hold down the volume down button, the center home button then press and hold down the power button. When something comes up on the screen let them go. If it says 'download' in a big yellow sign then you can easily have other options, lets say!

Then you can have 2.2 no issues since it came out for optus a while ago. When it arrives let the fun begin.

The stuff on the disks is probably just the pc software Kies.
You need to setup a google account, or log into one that you already have on the phone. You'll need that to download from the market anyway. Do you have a google account?

I ended up using google for the storage of all my contacts and calendar. Just too confusing to some on the sim card, some in the phone, some in google. Granted, they're all stored on the phone as such anyway. But it makes things cleaner.
Best simple and clean calendar widget - smooth calendar
Best free calendar apps - Business Calendar Free or Jorte. They're just front ends for your google or phone calendar but they look and function better. I use Calengoo which I had to pay for. Pocket Informant is also good except you can't click phone numbers etc within it to dial them. Bit of a pain.
Best free reminder alerts - calendar snooze.
If you use windoze and outlook then google calendar sync to sync you google stuff to outlook and back. Evolution in ubuntu syncs to google naturally, and I believe it's available for windows now.
And I'm telling ya's, gingerbread - have a taste!

Buggers me on the weather radar app! I use beautiful widgets for my weather app, but don't know any radar ones. Gingerbread is the new upcoming OS. In some cases, I reckon it's up to 10 times faster.

I use Aussie Weather Radar, which is just a wrapper for the BOM radar images. Works fine though.

They're a widget. So you long press on the screen, select widget, then scroll to which of the beautiful widgets you want on your screen. Then you customise. You can also re-customise by going into your app draw and selecting beautiful widgets.
Maybe you need to get up here a bit early so we can have a lesson!
