Ok folks, how bad is Vodafone?

Due to their exclusivity with the Desire HD, Telstra won't be getting an android version ever! Having looked at the Galaxy and DHD side by side, I'm very close to making a rash decision and jumping in with Voda just to get the phone that I want.

Optus reception at home is hopeless so which network does V work off?

I think Optus and Vodafone share their network.

    Optus has its own network.

Vodaphone has proven to be terrible in the last month.

After 15 years of Optus (coverage good), Telstra (coverage everywhere), Vodaflop has been a major disappointment. Calls drop out, calls can't get through, text messages arrive half an hour late. I'm in Canberra, and there are few blackspots here, but Voda has proved to be a major, major disappointment for me.

In the major cities they share towers/antennas, I don't know about other infrastructure. Outside the major cities i.e. rural backwaters like Canberra, they use their own.

Apparently they have "fixed" the glitches at vodafail. My better half is with them and she gets drop outs all the time. As much as I think optus is not great, coverage wise it's much better. I think I may go with telstra next time.

Well lads, looks like the Telstra/Galaxy combo is the way to go.

    Appreciate all the input.

you could buy the phone and unlock it...

I have a desire HD - nice phone - battery is dead set awful though.

Great phone though - even on Vodafone - no dropouts, no dramas. The iPhone was dropping out all the time.

Droid 2.2 is OK - but not as good as the Apple IOS.

Virge, given your stance on the iphone 4, which smart phone would you get?

iPhone 3GS on eBay for $300-$350.

A little portable charger for the battery - Optus Timeless for $99 a month brought down to $69 if you bring your own phone.

Droid is not bad... it just doesn't have thet control, smoothness and funtionality that IOS does. Droid does more - but it is not done well. IOS does less and is simpler but everything works the same way, and is integrated.

The openness of Droid means that the apps you buy are not tested - the screen freezes a bit and it can get "jolty" and "laggy".

My stance stays the same on the iPhone 4. One of my clients through his off a Sydney Ferry 3 days ago and used my phone to request a replacement Droid phone.

Maybe the iPhone 5 will be better...

Any chance they will do something like a 4GS, ie a model next year that fixes some of the problems with the 4?

The phone purchase was a thought but work covers costs and wouldn't outlay for the purchase.

Might drop by JB thus evening to see if the Galaxy is in stock and pickup a $100 voucher for porting my number across. I'll also get the ms one on the $79 plan for another $200 voucher. New tv here we come

Just spoke to Steve Jobs, he said there is nothing wrong with the iPhone 4. It is in fact so good.. the iPhone 5 will be a backwards step.

Virge, I'd have to agree at this point in time with the Roid vs iOS agrument. I'm currently on 2.1 and a little confused (or overawed) with the amount of useless crap on there.

Hoping the boys can PM some links to get me started, in particular the unofficial 2.2 update which is meant to be a marked improvement.

But most importantly, the reception has improved significantly and emails are very easy to navigate thanks to the larger screen. Suppose it will just take some time to learn the new menu configurations as I knew the 3G quite well.

Shavey, the 2.2 update is official now. Just plug it into Kies and upgrade the firmware.

Yeah, no update for the telstra model yet. And I'm not sure u can use the reg hack methods for it because of the telstra 850mhz band. It may not be enabled in the other firmwares.

I'm running froyo 2.2.1 JPY now and it's fantastic. So much faster. Someone must have taught the samsung techs how to write software.

So much stuff to learn... froyo etc... pity I don't have internet access at home over the Chrissy break to muck around.

I did find the teethering through kies a piece of cake though but with only 1G per month on my plan, I will use it sparingly.

I don't tether, I set up the phone as a wireless AP. I can't remember if that option was available in 2.1, but it's certainly easy as pie in 2.2 and you don't need to use the POS that is Kies.
