You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.
I am now in the maybe camp , rule basically says you can use anything to mark you ball’s position but marker/ coin is recommended. It also says you cannot use an existing mark on the green say a scratch or a hole . Tee is therefore acceptable the hole it makes maybe not .The argument would be if the hole is considered existing or new / current. That I would assume depends on time , if the tee was pulled and some time elapsed eg couple others putted out then the hole might be deemed as existing. Seems all a bit smelly to me , someone a bit desperate to win a hole maybe ?
What happened was the other player picked up his ball thinking the hole was lost , his playing partner said “what are you doing... you have a shot here” he had started to walk towards his cart at this time.
As there was a tee hole where the ball was, he still considered it marked.
He replaced the ball, made the putt and halved the hole.
Total time elapsed about 30 seconds.
I was unsure if it was within the rules or not.

A ball marker is an artificial object, a hole or mark on the green is not. If the tee was removed the spot is not marked

The tee is the marker, not the hole created by the tee. If you remove the tee your mark is gone, thus forfeit the hole.

Thanks for your opinions. I was very unsure of the rule and the other players were much more experienced players (low single figure players) who had played lots of pennants match play,so I just went with there thoughts.
Pretty hard to argue if you are uncertain of the rule.
I will raise the rule with the clubs captain for a ruling for future knowledge.
However I doubt it would ever happen again.
Thanks again.

Tagman, your Club Capt may be unsure of the rule or like forum gibberers (including myself) offer an opinion that may or may not be right.
The great thing these days is that you have rules / decisions on your phone. It would only take you seconds to get to the rule.
A low handicap is no guarantee of a correct answer.
Just for the what is acceptable to be used as a marker?
Played with someone years back on a Club Golf trip that used a Disprin tablet on the 1st hole at Naracoorte as that was the most convenient thing in his pocket at the time. By the time he had to replace his ball to putt the tablet had dissolved on a dewy green at 8am in the morning .
Would the residue of a white mark from a dissolved tablet be sufficient to say that the ball was still marked?
In the case above the guy only had a putt for a point and we couldn't see any white residue so he just took a wipe. Gave us something to talk and laugh about for the weekend.

its in the rule book. without looking its a small object like a coin or a tee. A hat, a leaf is not.
obviously the tablet itself is acceptable, and whilst i find that this story is a bit of a stretch, if the fact is that the marker is no longer there, then the rule is to place the ball at the nearest possible point, and add 1 stroke penalty.Played with someone years back on a Club Golf trip that used a Disprin tablet on the 1st hole at Naracoorte as that was the most convenient thing in his pocket at the time. I played in our (B Grade) Matchplay final 4 yesterday. On our 8th tee my opponent dragged his drive straight into the Penalty area 40m or so in front He then asked what his options were?. I started to answer, but the other Match players piped up over the top of me that he should hit a provisional. I started to search for his ball. The last time I saw it, it was going hard left further into the hazard. We completed the search without luck and in the interim he reloaded and hit a "provisional" I stopped him at that point to tell him he had been given the wrong advice, a provisional wasn't an option in this situation. The Provisional was now the ball in play, no harm no foul so to speak. I won the hole easily in any case. My opponent was relatively new to golf, but both the "Advisers" had played for decades. I was bemused to be told by both that they had never heard of a rule prohibiting a Provisional being played.
Daves, we have a couple of penalty areas in front of tees where its difficult to determine if the ball has carried the area. Rather than walk 150m and come back, we have a "local" allowing players to hit a provisional on those holes.
Clearly not the case in your situation, presume you won?
Hi PG,
correct. we do have a similar local rule on a couple of other holes for that reason. But there was no doubt with this one. The Tee is a narrowish funnel with trees in penalty areas on both sides to catch anyone who doesn't hit it straight. Sometimes they pop back out on the fairway, but this time two of us saw it go hard left, further in.
Yep, I won 4 & 2. Into the final next week.
I hit my drive down the centre of the bit damp fairway and upon arrival find my ball has ended up in a bombers pitch mark. The ball is unplayable as it is more than 50% below ground level. I was told that it was not plugged so had to play it as it lies. Took a drop and played my 3rd shot under a cloud of mega pissed offness.
What is the ruling here.
Love taking an unplayable from middle of the fairway.
Yeah. Nothing worse than hitting a nice drive up the middle then having to hit out of an old divot or pitch mark. There's certainly an argument for free relief in those cases, but I doubt that rule will ever change.
Whats a bombers pitch mark? Is that some sort of bird?
A person who hits it 75 metres past you.
I should of just said that it didn’t bounce.
Where I play from there are never any divots nearby.
So cannot use that excuse.
Once you go yellow, you will never go back
