What about putter covers?
Googling it suggests that it is a myth.
A “low handicap” golfer wishing to retain Amateur Status may not:

Had a recent situation...
just about to make contact with my as new fluro, neon, glow in the dark, bright as f&$@ yellow ball, when two ex Boer war diggers screaming at me, laying claim to my ball.
After I indicated that I had checked, and the ball was mine, they then moved on to their grotty old white ball.
My question is...
At what point can I claim provocation for snapping my club in two, then fatally stabbing both men?

Justifiable homicide I would think.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

Had two situations in foursomes last week...
a) One of the other players has a long line marked on his ball as for a putting aid. We are both off the green but he is on my line and I want to putt so I ask him to mark his ball, all OK so far. When it is his turn to play, he elects to putt also, but replaces his ball in the right spot but differently to how it was laying originally, in that now he has taken his time to replace his ball so that line on his ball is aiding his putting line.....can he do that? He was chipped by my team mate and we had a rules book with us but could not find anything specifically addressing this.
b) Same guy lands near a staked tree, marks his ball position and picks up ball, measures out 1 club from his marker, marks this spot and then drops his ball...but should he have 1) marked his ball position 2) marked his nearest point of relief 3) measured and marked one club length 4) then dropped his ball....is he at fault here?

Staked tree is one club length relief from the tree not from point of relief.

1- did he clean the ball? Did he leave it on the ground or holed it in two fingers?
2- I don't think so if local rules give relief from a staked tree
a) I am pretty sure the ball has to be replaced exactly in this situation, just can't find the specific rule or ruling at this stage.
b) As I understand it there is no requirement to mark anything in taking a drop, doing so just helps to eliminate doubt and add to the process to help ensure the drop is taken correctly.
1. On basis of how you worded it - no penalty for lining it up. However if he replaced ball and re-aligned it a 2nd time, then there is a penalty for that.
2. He will be penalised if he did not obtain complete releif from the obstruction, and that is a question of fact. That he measured one club length from original position, instead of nearest point of relief is not in itself a penalty.
I saw this happen on sunday during a social hit and made me wonder what would be the ruling in comp,
Par 3 first person knocks the ball onto the green , 2nd player hits and ball drops on the ball on the green already knocking it into the bunker , the first player has the right to move the ball back to the original spot correct? but as this par 3 is 190m long how do they judge where the ball originally was?
Correct. Work out where it was as best you can.

This is where that hole is possibly the worst for it.. when the flag is in the middle you cannot tell if the ball is in front or behind the pin , what looks like 3ft from the tee box is 10ft when you approach the hole.. but in saying that the ball "looks" closer always than it is so would always work in the first players favour.
Normaly in ball moved by another ball cases some one in the group has a good idea where it was because they're close enough to see it.
If a ball is moved by another ball and no I sees it. Did it happen? Right up there with forest, tree, sound

a slightly different question here:
I have trouble with my driver grip - more specifically the placment of my right hand. Is there anything in the rules that would stop me from putting a mark on the grip or shaft as an alignment aid for my hand? something like a small bit of tape, or permanent marker etc?
It's in the rule book Rubin. There is specific mention of what you can do in respect of the grip. A pen mark would be fine though
