If you tap in the second ball? Probably a 2 shot penalty and god knows what else.

Get up to the second ball and tap it in before anyone finds the first and you have a 4.

Yep. That's the ball in play.

If you find the first ball in bounds, then the provisional is no longer in play.

You can’t declare it lost, but you are under no obligation to look for it.

If your players partners aren’t dicks, they will listen to you and not look for it either.

Protect yourself from dicks, by saying that you lost one there last month, with the same markings.

If you can't be certain that the ball that they found is today's ball, then you can't play it.

There’s a weird decision on this regarding a provisional where if this happens, you either take the more likely or the two or drop in the middle. One shot penalty applies to both scenarios, instead of having to go back to the tee again

You don't have to play it. You can abandon it and go back to the tee and hit 3.
Why would he go back to the tee? If found in bounds wouldn't the only option be to declare it unplayable and proceed under the unplayable rule?

And going back to where he last played from (in his case the tee) is one of the options for an unplayable ball.

Question regarding 4 bb matchplay . Playing 12 th hole, three of us on the green my partner chips in for 4 . I don’t have a shot so pick up . Opponent “ a “ putts from a fair distance and misses , his ball rolls to an inch of opponent b’s marker and on his line , I give him his putt so as he can’t show partner the line speed etc , he ignores me and putts it in ( about a 4 footer) , I didn’t make an issue of it cause we were six up , opponent “b” then steps up and sinks his putt for a half . Now I think about it “a” was out anyway as his putt I gave him was for 5 , issue I have is can you do what they did ? I thought that once you are out you pick up , i am curious as it’s something that could have had a bearing on a match but could be done often if it isn’t covered by a ruling

Not exactly your situation because your concession doesn't count but it's a start.

Thanks , I found in the rules a concession should not be ignored, but as this implies , stiff shite if he is already out of the hole .I wonder if you could argue loss of hole under testing the green or touching the line of a putt.

Practice stroke during the play of a hole?

The first guy could be considered as practicing, but again would he be dq’d or would the team be penalised.

Well done @Toxic so gently and diplomatically teaching us all something new.Decision 27-2b/1.Player has no obligation to search for the original ball. Competitors can. When Player putts in the provisional ball the original is then deemed lost! Matters not if competitors then find the original.Only if your putt was the furthest from the hole so your not playing out of turn and sunk before your original was found, would you get away with this loop hole though. Yeah?Interesting.

    Rules query ftom PGA

Involves Mickleson and i can't find any footage

Did anybody 2nd rd see Mickelson hit into a hazard then chip out with his caddie holding a length of Aggie pipe out the way so he could play it?
How was he allowed to do that if he was in a hazard?
Mite have been the 14th or 15th hole.

Can a caddy hold something whilst a shot is being played?

    I saw a bit.

They first lift was to identify the ball, once they confirmed it was the ball they went for a ruling. I didn’t wait for the rest

I did see it, but didn't hear the explanation. There was a Rules Official guiding them through it, so I assumed it was "sanctioned".

I want to know why Noren was allowed to re-drop after his first drop behind the 18th in regulation.

That was the only explanation I could come up with. The problem is, from the footage I saw and replayed, it appeared to bounce backwards.
