Golf Course Open Day Thread
Just thought I would remind everyone that there is a thread with plenty of open comps around the SE Qld area listed here:
http://www.ozgolf.net/forums/showthread.php?t=473
I have made a couple of updates, but I'm sure there are a few that may be outdated.
If you have any to add or update let me know.
If any of the other areas, eg Sydney Area, want to compile a list, we can make a sticky for that too.

What sort of times on the timesheet would normally be allocated to the comp, Cobra?

Can you start one and I will add as many as I know of. Or can I just start a sticky?

Do you want something that is like the SE Qld thread, where it is organised into days of the week? (I find this handy)
Do you want it locked without any other posts from other members?
You won't be able to create a sticky, and you won't be able to lock it from other posts. However, you can start a normal thread, and I can turn it into a sticky and lock it later on.

Sounds good Andy, I will do it when I get up tomorrow or Friday, am off to night shift. Only thing I noticed with the SE QLD one was the day that was being refered to was in small print in the topic heading and was hard to find until i realised the layout.

Thanks. I was thinking of changing that myself.
I am also thinking of just listing these open days on a seperate webpage like the links page instead of a forum sticky. But I'll take it one step at a time.

you updated that Blue Marker challenge is now on Wednesdays at Emerald Lakes?
Wednesdays is "Sporters" comp and they like the course set up easy.

Someone rang them about their Monday open comp and told them it was a Wednesday instead. I'll just remove the Blue Marker bit then?

minor change -
with Oxley, i was advised to now ring the Club House direct on 3379 6322, rather than ringing and getting transferred via the Pro Shop on 3379 6292.

played Gailes today. again $10 big ones only. so maybe change the thread for Gailes Wed & Sun, to just read $10. it can be changed later if they ever do decide to charge more.
this is excellent value for money. good course condition. i don't understand why they don't have a full comp every Sunday.

I wanted to post some of this year's upcoming open comps, after noting them for myself the other day, after the Headland Easter weekend. I'm certainly not going to play in them all, but it's nice to know what's coming up and being able to plan for a round. Especially if you are a trophy event slut like A-Lo.
Apr 21 - Ashgrove Cup - Ashgrove GC
Jun 7/8 (Sun/Mon) - Caloundra Amateur Champs - Caloundra GC (from memory there were handicap restrictions)
Jun 17 - Nudgee Plate - Nudgee GC
Jun 23/24 - Wide Bay Open & Closed Championship - Hervey Bay
Jul 22 - Horton Park Open - Horton Park GC
Jul 29 - Frank Foley Trophy - Gailes GC
Aug 4/5 - Twin Towns Open - Coolangatta Tweed Heads GC
Aug 19 - Gold Coast Open - Southport GC
Sept 7/8 - Town of Nambour Open - Nambour GC
Sept 29/30 - City of Ipswich Open - Ipswich GC
Oct 14 - SC & SBDGA Open & Closed Championship - Caboolture GC
Oct 27-28 - Noosa Lakes District Open - Tewantin Noosa GC
Nov 17-18 - OZgolf Championships - Kooralbyn Valley
Nov ? - Qld B & C Grade Champs - Noosa Springs
I don't know for sure that they are all open, but several of them definitely are. I'm sure there's more big open events around too.

I like the idea of Hervey Bay - I think we owe it to the locals to head up that way once a decade or so.

Blakey, do you know what is meant by "Open & Closed Championship"?

It means that there are two major events:
Open : best Gross score, anyone from anywhere can enter
Closed: best gross score from members of clubs within that district
Its just a way of ensuring that the District Champion is a local, but to encourage other golfers to attend, no doubt it is also an AB event.
Most likely minor events, grades, nets, runner ups etc are all Open. I woudl say there is only two closed events, Overall Gross and Nett.

You guys are lucky to get to play in these events. Down here they are in the majority to only open to A graders. In that they have restrictions like home club up to 12 handicap but visitors only up to 4.

they do but only up to 4, most events are called Vardon Events and they are for up and coming amateurs to get closer to turning pro.

NSW:
Mid-am Champs (Restricted)
Possible others
Don't any of the Vardon events run a comp for us hackers, or is the full field for the Vardon.
A lot of the one's we play are district comps and not as high as those under the QDGA. I can't find a Sydney District GA website, only NSWGA.

No Sydney district Association AP. Guess that is another reason that we, if could get the fields, get more than 2 maybe 3 groups in a Sydney open day. Saturdays in Sydney are very hard to find open days that are truely open days.

There is more than 100 golfers on the Gold Coast that play off a handicap of 4 or less, therefore in Sydney I guess it would have to be more than 1000.
Vardon events naturally must limit the field, as they do with any event.
There would be plenty of Open Amateur events for Sydney golfers to play in, but you wont find them in the Vardon schedule. Keep an eye on your club noticeboard, or if there is a particular golf course you like, give them a ring and find out when is their Open championship, Almost every golf club has one.
