Default Outdoor Synthetic Putting Green - self laid

Been toying with this as an idea at home but, don't want to fork out for a professionally installed one.

I'm not the most practically or technically gifted individual but, has anyone put in their own synthetic outdoor green?

How difficult (or easy) was it?
    Has it been a success?
How does it standup to the ravages of weather? (I live in FNQ - lots, and I mean lots of heavy rain in the wet season?

And, if anyone has any solid practical advice on how to prepare the area, lay and secure the synthetic turf I'd appreciate that too along with an approximate cost

    Cheers

I don't know if Inside Social Golf magazine archives articles online, but our very own Rod Morri did a series on a DIY putting green.

The former course super from Brookwater has a business supplying and installing synthetic turf and putting greens (and landscaping etc etc).

Geoff's a top bloke, very down to earth. I believe he supplies the ProTech turf, which is supposed to be pretty good.

Good luck and share your pics!

Outcast, go visit the synthetic turf guys in their new shop on the corner of Anderson & Adelaide streets (just near Status Plus). I think they are called Advantage something-or-other. They supply & lay all different varieties of turf, including specific golf stuff. I think you will find the turf itself costs about $40/m2, plus prep & laying costs. There are a few places where you can see the turf "in action", including the nature strip in front of Status Plus, and some median islands on Lake Street (between Spence & Hartley Streets). The turf is guaranteed for 7 or 8 years from memory and that includes colour fastness. I've got some literature here somewhere with FAQs and laying instructions etc, but you can also get all that from them.

    Thanks to all for the links and information;

I have been discussing with Mrs Outcast after seeing some information and prices. To build something decent appears to be about $7000 - $9000 if they do it all for me or around $2000 - $3000 if I do it myself. Question is, do I feel confident and more importantly, competent enough to do it.

Mrs Outcast suggests this is not real high on her priority list right now but, will continue the research.

Thanks for the local info Courty..

The parents had one put in at our place, Flavzz is correct most definitely not cheap.

In terms of handling weather, well we have had some of the heaviest and prolonged periods of rain and it has held up no worries at all.

As for it being a success, for what i use it for yeah most definitely, out backyard is pretty steep so isn't overly practical for putting but the pitching and chipping its ideal.

Have thought about doing this also.

Consider myself relatively handy and have the perfect spot for it, just need $gorillas now.

I have one though I must admit I hardly use it.
It nearly always gets a run when friends are over for pizza or a bbq though.

I have done my whole yard in synthetic grass which includes a putting green. The putting green isnt large but big enough. 7m x 3m. It is laid on 150mm of crusher dust whihc you make any undulations required. I was quoted an obscene amount fom landscapers and one of them left a sample with the manufacturers name on it. They wany about $90 a square meter. I spoke direct to the manufacturer...Urban Turf solutions at Yatala and it cost $27.50 a square meter. All up this puting green cost about $800 DIY an it has stood up to all the Gold Coast rain over the past 2 years. You just need to add sand to it keep it weighed down and also run smoothly. hope this helps

I think retro-modding a lawn is the wrong way to do it. Should I ever build a new house again (maybe in Shell Cove ) then it'll be a definite. When you look at the cost of a lawn setup and maintenance over the years, it simply makes sense. When I buy a new house, I'll probably just get it priced into the mortgage. Either way, my next house will be done.

It means no more stupid retic systems to stuff around with as well.

One thing that concerns me is whether the next generation of kids will actually grow up with much lawn to play on in their own houses. Will this create a grass allergy epidemic?
