What concerns me more is the fixation with picking a side; there seems to be a compulsion to declare oneself in one camp or the other from this day forth for ever and eternity. This is unhealthy, I think.

It's not gay if balls aren't touching.

    What's to pick ?
It's not like you really have a choice what team you play for, you either are or you aren't !!

henno, are you proposing that we all abandon sexuality as we know it, and simply roam around changing teams as we see fit ?

Kind of. I'm not saying you or I have to abandon our sexuality and the decision* to shack up with the ladies. I'm saying that society still seems to expect each and every person to identify with one group or the other. What purpose this serves I don't know, and the idea of there being opposing "teams" just strengthens the divide.

I'm not saying that everyone needs to start running around rooting everyone.

(NOTE: decision is a bad word, I know, but I can't be bothered.)

I'm concerned that banks are willing to lend me about double what I think I can reasonably afford. So much for responsible lending.

If I borrowed the limit and rates went up by 1 percentage point I would be underwater. I guess this is one of the reasons why house prices are so high.

This bothers me. And not just in the gay debate. There seems to be a compulsion to declare whatever you are. Particularly in the US, so I guess here as well.

Tiger Woods, for all his recent issues, refused to label himself.

Reminds me of the Will and Grace episode, where Grace is voting for the Jewish candidate, and Will (or maybe the nutty gay guy) is voting for the gay candidate, but they do not know who they are.

I'll agree on that one. 7 years ago we got pre-approval for finance to build our house. I was staggered at how much they said our maximum loan value would be. If we spent that much, we would have a frikkin' mansion, but we'd be sleeping on the floor & eating bread & water.

what you want to afford and what you can really afford are two different figures. many of the banks use the aptly named Hendersons poverty index to determine what you really need to live on per month, which is really an absolute minimum, doesnt include golf, beer, smokes, womens stuff which are really just excesses. Most of us prefer the luxury of spending more than the minimum on our general living.

The exact figures should be easily found on google, but something like about $1600pm for a couple, and add $300 for each kid

If I borrowed the limit and rates went up by 1 percentage point I would be underwater
your affordability is assessed on a rate higher than the current rate. (probably close to 9.00% right now)

    Blakey,

Just used one of the Big 4's online home loan calculators to see what my repayments would have been at 9%, and I'm unable to make the payments without factoring in my bonus (which is discretionary and could be nil for any given year).

You realise this is meant to keep the costs of our handicap down?
IMHO golflink do not take enough of an advantage of their database.
