Melbourne Recommendations - public courses
Hi there
Just moved to Oz from the UK on a working holiday visa for up to 12 months. Currently in Western Australia but on-route to the Melbourne area and planning to stay there for approximately 6 months.
I知 keen to get some golf in while I知 here so would appreciate recommendations for good value public courses in and around Melbourne. I知 a solid single figure player and am looking for some courses that will be relatively testing yet still enjoyable.
Also, as we were travelling through Asia before coming to Australia I didn稚 bring any clubs with me. Any suggestions on how to go about putting together a decent set on the cheap? (clubs seem pretty expensive out here).
Cheers
Greg

For public access the best tip would have to be the Peninsula i'd think, but there are numerous, worth playing within shorter drive as well. And if you've got time mid week you'll be able to enjoy a few of the decent private tracks it you're a member of a club back in the UK.

Buy a set on the classies, flog em when you are leaving.
To get to good public access courses as well as most of the private ones you will need a car (or a friend with one).
On the mornington peninsula - the dunes and st andrews beach
On the bellarine penisnula - 13th beach (beach course) and toruqay sands
Just north of melbourne - growling frog
If you hook up with a social club like the Italian Golf Association (http://www.igamelbourne.com.au/) or bushranger golf (http://www.bushrangergolf.com.au/) or one of the other ones around they can hook you up with handicaps and get you games at good courses. In your case (assuming you can play some midwek golf) I would probably lean towards IGA.
