I'm playing Thaxted Park for the first time this Sunday.
I've been told to expect it to be slow and maybe not in great condition. Has anyone played it recently - is this fair?
I'd expect it to have its fair share of boggy patches given the amount of rain we've had. Ive played it a few times in the winter and the greens have always played quite quick
It's crap like the movie.
A couple of guys at work want to play the vines on Friday, worth a look?
Vines is good.
Hopefully weather turns out ok.
Not sure if they've improved things at Thaxted but condition wise in summer the fairways are like concrete, and in winter a bog!
For something a bit different a mate and I played there in the comp (Sat) yesterday. The course is not overly challenging, and I managed a net 72 on a stroke round for the first time I played it. Even made the Advertiser It was preferred lies which "sort of" helped...I mean sort of because I couldn't ever find a better lie with a club length anyways, so I mostly played it where it lay. Was shitgun start off the sixth, starting with a birdie and had a number of birdie opportunities but unfortunately couldn't convert because of the incredibly slow greens. Had to really bash it to get there and a number of times I ended up quite a bit short....definitely not used to such slow greens. Two holes that were quite challenging was the 7th, long par 4 that you could actually use a driver on and that elevated green par 3. That par 3 was actually quite tricky....even a flushed 6 iron didn't get the required 140 to make the green....the wind was quite strong.
The fairways were dodgy and the second cut was very very hacky. I'm not having a go at the course as I was expecting as much, but I will be honest about it. As it is part of the BTM group it was going to be luck of the draw in terms of maintenance and the greens were not even cut prior to sat comp, which would have made them a bit more friendly.
Despite sounding quite negative about it, I actually really enjoyed being out there, the members were super friendly - we were matched up with the club captain who was fantastic. I did enjoy the challenge and playing a new course I haven't played before and nabbing a net 72 certainly didn't hurt. Probably be a while before I get out there again to collect my one ball winnings heh, but it was great fun for something different than Kooey on a Saturday. Played Penfield on a sat so will have to give Oakbank a go sometime.
I'm surprised the greens were slow as most of the times I've played there they were very good and medium to quick. Most of my rounds there are usually earlier and and later in the year thou. It's a pity their fairways are so poor as it does deserve better.
I look forward to your assessment of Oakbank as it's a course on my never bother again with list.
Had my first hit out in about a year last week with my dad. Played the redeveloped course at Mawson lakes
since they have got the recycled water the place looks much better. A bit confusing to find your way around the first time but they have made some massive improvements to the course
I am heading out there again with the old man in a week or so.. will put up some more info re the changes to the course after that.

I have played North Lakes quite a few times over the years, yes its not a super challenging course, or in overly great condition. But its affordable, is at times a genuine mental test of golf as if you go offline you generally have big tree trouble to deal with. For memory greens are very hard and on the quicker side....
Its pretty local to me and I always enjoy playing a round of golf over going to the range so will look to get out there more often.
**edit** sorry i forgot to add, i remember the course having issues with vandals on trail bikes tearing up fairways and greens - due to lack of boundary fencing on some parts...

North Lakes greens play much quicker in the summer from memory, which is understandable considering the weather.
How are those trees growing RHS on #1? haven't been to the course in over 10 years.
