SA 'heaps good' Course thread

I'm not that fussed with it as a course but it's got it's good holes.

Need one leg longer than the other though.

Flagstaff Hill is routed for a real estate development (50 years old).
Holes play parallel to the creeks, so lots of sidehill lies.
There is a northern, eastern, southern and western leg to the course, involving holes going out and back.
The western leg (part of front nine) has sand underneath, but much of the rest of the course was on bay of biscay (heavy clay), especially the eastern leg (much of which was sold for housing prior to building the southern leg).
The southern leg was built on land which became available from SA Water after the major road on the western boundary was built.

North Lakes near Brisbane has a similar routing design, but with more elevation change along the creeks.

It was 10 members that said it was the best corse in S.A hence the big -minus for having NFI.

Having played four of the 5, and looked at the other one on my leisure day off yesterday, I also elevate Grange West to number 2. I really enjoyed the course, and I repeat what I said at the time. If I didn't know that it had been remodelled I would have thought it was all original. Whatever the changes were, they were very sympathetic to what was there before.

However, having played Kooyonga again on Monday, I rate it a strong number 3. Those who have a good recall of course detail may remember the 5th as just about the worst hole on the course, with its rough and moguls in front of the green forcing a layup from the tee. The rough and moguls have gone, leaving fairway in front of the green, and quite a few bunkers awaiting the off-line aggressive drive. It is now a much better hole.

I'm still a fan of Kooyonga, and I put it ahead of Glenelg. I'll reserve judgement of Mt Compass until I've played it, but from the road it looked a bit tricked up to me. By the way, I couldn't tell whether the greens had been cored and sanded or not. It was alleged over the weekend that Lady Bay greens had not been renovated, so we were given incorrect info months ago.

It's not a bad track by any means, but I didn't enjoy it as much as Glenelg or Mt Compass.

Be keen to see the changes that have been made. There were a few holes that seemed out of place, but with the moguls gone, sounds like one of them has been brought into line.

Good course but heavy soil over shale that gets very wet during winter if rainfall is high. Only played there many years ago so I don't remember what practice facilities there are. Other than that very good facilities.

Mount Compass has been cut from the existing land layout, no tricking up went on with the construction of that one unless you call carving a few bunkers out tricking up. This is a must play venue on a Saturday one year as it's a hidden Gem. Play well here and you'll be rewarded but have a bad one and you can have a real bad one.
James the R.A member in my group played Lady Bay the day before and confirmed 100% they had not been cored.
Unfortunately when bookings are made in advance you have to trust what they tell you. At least they were honest enough to let us know maintenance was scheduled and not be happy to let us book, take our money only to find out upon arrival leaving a very nasty taste after.

I concur regarding Grange West - It is a very good course and one that is underrated, I rank it high; perhaps in line with Kooey.

Kooey has some exceptional land; it's just a shame they covered the natural dunes with trees and more frustratingly bushes, good news is that Crafty is taking baby steps to removing it, you cannot deny it is a wonderful sight that plays well all year round.

Some good news with the council deciding to keep willunga an 18 hole course and will also increase the maintenance budget.

Lived 15-20 minutes from Willunga for 30 years. Never played there and don't know why. I've always driven straight past to Mt. Compass.
