Default Specific Golf Exercise At The Gym

I know there was another thread about weights a while back but I'm stuffed if I can find it.

Anyway, this fat bastard joined a gym this week (a 24 hour chain of gyms at that) and this morning I did my first lot of strength training. Whilst it was good and all (except for the fact it was 4.30am when I walked in) I really didn't have any specific training in mind.

Could those gym freaks out there point me in the right direction? I specifically want to do exercises which relate to golf. Forget about the cardio stuff, as I have that side under control (who knows, I might even do AP's Clem7 10k run).

you should get a fitness assensment from the gym you joined for free, just get them to give you a whole body workout to start with, then once you are a bit fitter then change it.

Just remember to get you heart rate up and the kilos will fall off, as longas you are eating right.

I think davepupies is a bodybuilder he may be ableto help you further.

Didn't you have a personal trainer for a while in the ACT ? If so did they not give you some golf related work to do ?

Getting a program done up tonight. I was hoping for some knowledge from a golf perspective. Who knows what quality of trainer I will speak to tonight?

I don't do any "golf specific" exercises. As long as you have good form, a general all-body resistance type program will help. Obviously core exercises are crucial to golf, but they are crucial to just about every sport so I would argue you should be doing them a lot anyway.

I'm sure razaar will help you out more with regards to golf-specific stuff, but I don't really bother. Then again, I'm barely a golfer.

We did a lot of back/arm related stuff. Not too much leg work strangely enough.

Do legs. Seriously. They may not help your swing, but they are the largest muscles in your body and burn heaps of energy. Don't ignore them, like so many people do.

A full body exercise program is exactly that: full body.

That's what I thought. You spend 4+ hours a round walking on your legs. It makes sense to me to make them as fit as possible to prevent late round fatigue.

i've spent over 2 years on this stuff.

can detail more later on, but core is essential.

most of my issues were flexibility, so a lot of rotational work and stretching.

the titleist performance institute is a great resource.

    Shaun

On your first visit the gym assistant will assess your fitness and flexibility levels (or he/she should). You will receive a fitness program to address those areas where you are weak and a basic all over body conditioning program. At this early stage the issue for you is not so much the exercises but your commitment to a fitness routine for a very long time.
A good way to go about it is to look for a fitness partner, somebody who works out at the gym when you are there (doesn't need to be at your level of strength). This way, you can push each other and spot each other on exercises where you can get stuck (bench press, seated military press etc).
I am happy to give you golf specific stuff some of which depends on the equipment at your gym. In the meantime do the exercises your fitness person assigns you, using weights and reps you can handle and do them with a max of 20 seconds break between sets and exercises. That way your strength program will also be a cardio program and a fat burner; and you will be in and out of the gym in under 45 minutes.

Thanks Ray. Looking forward to getting tonight out of the way so I get some structure to what I am doing.

The partner bit could be an issue. Nobody else there at 4.30am.

As a point of interest Shaun, which gym did you join?

    Shaun,

    Call this guy: Michael 0413 482 968.

He's specialist on golf specific exercises - anything from posture correction to performance enhance.

I do go to gym and have a regular personal trainer but with golf specific exercise I wouldn't trust them as they are only trained for more general purpose exercise.

As I am getting back from Hospital and 20kg lighter - I am in the same boat.

For golf - you have to do the outside muscles... shoulders, quads, forearms. Stability and Core is the name of the game.

Core is power and stability is control.

The name of the game is also symmetry.

Don't just work the core as it pertains to the golf swing (ie. one-directional). It needs to be done in reverse as well to develop the partner muscles to the ones that we feel ourselves using.

As far as weights, I agree with henno that a normal workout shouldn't be an issue, except that you need to be doubly certain as a golfer you are giving your back and shoulders the same amount of love as your mirror muscles, or your posture will go to shite.

Same applies to core work. Lower back-focused work needs to be on par with ab-focused stuff.

Superman, plank, scissors (cue Henno posting that South Park pic ) and leg/arse lifts are king.

PS - Most personal trainers at McGyms are as close to useless as it is possible to get with a certificate in your hand.
