    Default Royal Queensland

Thanks to a strange quirk of fate, I was invited to play at RQ with Pup, Henno and Daves today. We had a leisurely round taking many photographs and discussing the relative merits of various things.

To start with we have the Practice fairway, one of the practice chipping greens, practice putting green and the understated clubhouse. I have also included a photo of some random that happened to walk in. They will let anyone into this place

A purple shirt, FFS when did you learn to dress, the eighties? You don't have a green suit in the wardrobe do you?

Pete, how many of the old holes still remain intact in the new layout ?

Are the first and second holes still the same as they were before the renos ?

We played of the black tees cos Pup is a gorilla and none of us wanted to argue with him. Much comment was made of the la-di-da bin at the first tee (a lacquered box with a mesh lid) and the attached ballwasher.

    Hole 1: 463m Par 5.

Bunkers left a bit short of driving distance. More bunkers on the approach. The green runs 35 metres front to back in a pear shape. All of the greens have movement in them, without resorting to buried elephants.

I played the old course many moons ago and can not remember the layout at all. All the holes have had some sort of makeover as all the bunkering is now Clayts specials. Due to the big construction site none of the holes on the east of the bridge are in use.

    Onto hole 2: 167M Par 3.

Innocent looking hole, but the green is only 24 metres deep at its widest and it is very easy to bounce through it. Nice waste area to the right off the tee. The green photo is from the right side looking across it.

Give the guy a break, it was the only thing he had to go with his purple tie.

To be fair just, a purple shirt would hide the gravy stains very well

    Onward. Hole 3: 292 Par 4.

Probably my favourite hole on the day. A real mix of risk/reward with many options off the tee. Water right that comes into play if you go too long. Bunkers short (220m to carry) but more hidden behind them. Best play is over the bunkers to set up a shot from the left fairway into the long kidney shaped green.

The second shot is from just over the first set of bunkers.

Some might think it's a little ugly, but The Gateway Bridge is a pretty awesome backdrop for such a nice looking course. Perhaps it's the contrast between work and leisure?

Hey we are at 4, and you go and spoil them with that vista!

    Anyway, onto 4

    Hole 4: 375m Par 4

We turned around from 3 and looked at this one playing straight into the wind. The bunker right is at 245 metres. The ideal line would be over the bunker to approach a green that runs right to left. 2 Tiers. The green has large collection areas to each side. Something that is used a lot around the course. The greens are all raised and contoured, and this counters the flat appearance of the course very well.

There was much discussion on hole 5 when we realised that it was a 456m par 4.

On the tee Pup's first arketecha comment came out, mentioning that the trees encroach on the fairway. I think this may be the only hole that it is noticable on. I went exploring in the trees and forgot about the camera on this one.

Thankfully the hole was downwind and this shortened the length considerably.

    Hole 6: 496m Par 5

A nice hole with water all up the right side, although well right. This one has bunkers splitting the fairway at driving distance and also from 70 metres short of the green. This makes for a number of options, and I am sure placement would vary depending on the location of the hole on the green. The Green runs from left to right.

This hole was the 5th in the old layout was it not ?

I seem to recall that it used to be a par 5 for the members though, but was converted to a par 4 for Pro events.

    Hole 7: 350 metre Par 4

Dogleg left around the tree. Bunkers on the outside of the dogleg at 265m. Green runs from right to left and has a large gully running through it. Approach down the length of the green is from the right side, although this makes for a longer approach shot. The pin was on the back, so a short approach in rolled back into the gully. If the greens were mown close and running fast it would be very scary.

It's worth mentioning that RQ has a true penalty from being in the rough. I was all of a foot offline on this hole with my ball resting in the first cut and felt genuinely penalised for missing the fairway. In many places you could see the sharp steps from fairway to first cut to semi-rough to "proper" rough.

You could be right. It would also explain the trees encroaching. The blue tees are 406, so a fair bit shorter.

    Hole 8: 125m Par 3.

A pretty hole with a well elevated green. You tee off over a large waste area. Forgot the camera on this one, Pup or Henno will need to add some shots in. Playing downwind made it an interesting shot.

Here's another shot of that deep gouge in the green (clicky for fullsize).

I don't want to get all 'archie' on anyone, but the style of green is referred to as a 'Biarritz' green. Although, it is a pretty mild one.
