Default 2010 NSW Matchplay Set up

    Hi All

As Ping Jnr won the Matchplay title last week it now means we can get the ball rolling for the 2010 version.

Some things popped up this year that we have to avoid let happen again. Forfeits, I know some are unavoidable but this year was shocking we had more forfeits than matches played.

What can we do to fix this?

Should we have a post count before you can play in it? Alot of low posters said they would play but later forfeited.
Do we need a pre qual? Small field of 16 maybe?
Do regular players have preference in the seeding? previous Champ is 1
    Strict time limits on games?
A round Robin setup like the NQ Matchplay? Regular games wit ha few matches held.
Need to cater for mid week games?

Post ideas to fix the problem so next year flows smoothly. All ideas will be considered.

Also guys & girls register your interest here too.

I was thinking of the round robin, but we seem to have enough trouble getting 2 games played, let alone 10 !

I will have to pass this year, I'm on the committee for my kids soccer. I'll struggle to get many games in at all (that aren't 6am hitoffs) for those 6 months.

    Grunt

Would Sydney be interested in coming down for another one day State of Origin?

I should be able to organise Parlyboy, TG, Bluescooter to represent the ACT with enough notice - reckon you could get three more from Sydney.

I'm happy to host at Gungahlin Lakes, or we could see if we could play elsewhere.

Sounds good to me Benno, just need to pick my team to defend our Title.

    I am thinking
    • Grunt
    • Jimandr
    • Dotty
    • Andrew
Pretty good team Jim would come into the team as a replacement for SMS now that he has defected to the dark side.

Assuming that my plans to get myself a club membership and handicap by February next year come to fruition, I'm keen to get involved.

    1. Grunt, thanks for organising 2009. As Virge said, you have the patience of Mother Theresa.

    2. For 2010, we should set an entry deadline, say 1st Jan, as this will give a chance for 1st round matches during Jan holidays, daylight saving, etc.

    3. Condition of entry that must be flexible enough to play within a reasonable timeframe. (3OD has already mentioned that kids' soccer will limit his opportunities.) Ping Jnr is now on his learner's permit, so that should make things easier for them next year.

    4. We should have up to 24 players. 8 seeds (2009 quarter-finalists or past record) go straight into the second round. The remaining up to 16 have a first round match. (Similar to this year, but I suggest doing the draw after the entry deadline.)

    5. Other than that, pretty much same as 2009, which I thoroughly enjoyed, met some great opponents and great fellow-competitors, who made up the tee-time.

    6. Go Dotty !
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

Does Ping Jnr ever post on here?

Also all good points Dotty but I don't agree with number 6.

I think you have to be strict with round completion dates. It might not work smoothly the first year you are strict, but it will very quickly start to come together. This year, even watching from afar, was laughable.

But the main thing is that people need to decide before they nominate whether they are willing to put the effort in to organise and play matches, and like Pete did, assess realistically whether other demands will stop them getting it done. If you're not sure about both of those things, do the rest of the field and the event organiser a favour and don't nominate.

I suggested this last year, and I'll do so again.

We should have two strands, a midweek group and a weekend group, and the winners meet in the final, if we get enough players for two groups of eight.

Whether that occurs or not, the competition simply depends upon the commitment of the players. It does require a certain degree of willingness to change our normal routine to participate in an event of this nature. In my view, going out of the comfort zone is part of the fun.

Naturally, no matter which format we follow, I am in (unless I've given up the game in frustration by then).

and count me in, if only to give someone an easy passage to round 2 . I'll need pm notifications tho as work must consider this site a threat to national security as they have banned access . Two young boys limits the spare time at home.

I would be keen, but it would depend on the time frames. Mid week games would probably be my best chance.

Taking the mid-week and weekend streams a little further, if we don't get enough players to do full streams, why not seed the draw depending on who can play when. For example, put guys that can play mid week playing each other for the first few rounds, then the same with the weekend only players. Might help more rounds get completed, then when the scheduling gets a bit tougher, there are less games to try and organise.

Also would like to add I am open to passing the baton onto some one else to organise this from now on. Not throwing toys out of the cot, just that work and other stuff is up in the air at the moment and maybe someone else can work it all out better,

    I'll do it.

I did it the second year, so i know what needs to be done. I would've done it again, but Grunt was in ultra-enthusiastic organise everything mode at that time, so I let him find out first hand how many wisdom of solomon moments arise in this thing.

My real personal view is that the winner should be the organiser for the next year. In Pingjnr's case that may not be realistic, so I'll volunteer.

I also need to find a way to manipulate the rules so that I can get the title back while playing woeful golf. That can only be done from a position of power.

I will be unavailable next year. I am in the middle of a project that at this stage could see me working every weekend from late January to early June.

I will speak to Nathan and see what he wants to do. He should have his "P" plates in April but up until then he will be reliant on me driving him or have to play matches at Carnarvon.

As Grunt has raised no objection I am going to take control of the running of the 2010 NSW Matchplay.

My first decision is to close off nominations in two weeks time, Sunday 17 January. The draw will be done that day, which will give some fortunate persons who are still on holidays the chance to get a match played straight away.

The draw will not be totally random. I'm going to structure it so that players known to prefer midweek play will be in the same half, and weekend players will be in the other half. I'll seed The Pings so they don't play each other first round, but they might be drawn for the next round if they survive.

Depending on how many starters we have, I'll let latecomers fill up spots instead of having byes, but those latecomers will get no leniency if they find themselves drawn against someone who can't play at a suitable time.
