Decent fish???? That big a salty is fish of a lifetime for most. I have 3 92cm's. Can't wait to crack a metre.

There are quite a few caught ever year....probably many more hooked. You don't get that big by being stupid. Gun fisho's were getting a lot of dam barra after the floods (ex awoonga).... but when they are true salt barra they are in so much better condition, than the dam cousins, due to the conditions they constantly battle ie fighting current and outwitting predators (sharks, crocs etc).

I fished the Daly river in NT in the run off many moons ago... Seriously, it was as close to shooting big barra in a barrel as you can get. Run off fishing is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are getting barra up to about 120cm in the dams up here. Around 80cm for salties.

Caught a 7' 7" Spanish Mackerel off the western edge of Forbes Island in 1976. It actually stopped the boat when it hit and almost pulled me over the transom. Ended up drowning it after managing to attach the cord line to a cleat. I caught another just under 6 ft in 3 ft of water on the edge of a reef off Possession Island in the same year. I have a photo of that somewhere, see if I can locate it.

He's been trying to crack a BIG barra for 25 years, you're right about fish of a lifetime. He catches heaps but they usually cap out in the 20 - 30 pound bracket and he's never been lucky getting some biggies vs the quantity he catches.

I've seen a lot of run off footage, incredible.

You're dead right about the true salties too which was why i made sure i mentioned it. BIG barra in dams and impoundments now are very common.

134cm and who knows what weight. Rough estimate is now at 65 pounds. I don't reckon it's an ounce under myself lol

Tough gig but i'd be interested in a popper guestimate!

The ones we have caught up here at about 110cm max out at about 18kg, so your 65lb may be on the mark.

Cheers BITS, he made that estimate today. He towed it around for ages before release to make sure it had some kick and a great chance of recovery. Fight was around 20 mins, think he said it took 50m first run. He was fishing 10kg braid i think, around the rocks. Will slap up a picture of the lure later or tommorrow.
