Finally after almost 2 weeks after Dad's Heart scare, I caught up with him yesterday afternoon at the Hospital. I was off limits when he was in ICU in case i still had traces of the cold I had.
Great to see him, but Christmas starts when he is home, hopefully early next week.

When cleaning up the shed on Thursday I found a spare battery for my Bushnell. I chucked it in the bag for safekeeping.

3rd hole today the rangefinder died. Spare battery at hand!

The R2D2 'bop It' toy my daughter got me for Xmas. Something very simple but yet enjoyably addictive.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

I could put this story in any of the things threads, but as I wish to acknowledge some good service, I'll put it here.

As I was just starting my return journey from my annual Xmas trip to see my family near Narrabri, I suffered a flat tyre. My first one for at least the 8 years I have had my current car, and perhaps about 10 years or so. So I guess I can't curse my bad luck too much.

I delved deep into the memory bank and worked out what to do, only to find that I couldn't get the wheel nuts off. So, there was no choice but to call the NRMA. This is the part I like. Firstly, I had the horrible flash of memory that I hadn't paid my annual NRMA fee, and said so to the Operator. She said: no worries, can you pay it now over the phone? So, tick number 1. The lady operator was good, and sympathetic, and told me the Serviceman would text me with time of arrival. Which he did, so tick number 2. Then he turned up as promised within the 15 minute time he said, and did the job straight away, no fuss, so tick number 3.

I may have been a bit lucky that it was 9.30am on Boxing Day and the NRMA guy had no other jobs on, and that I wasn't too far from his base, but I had disturbed his Boxing Day, and he didn't mind at all. Good work and kudos to the NRMA.

But the experience got me thinking about one thing. All the car companies now offer their own roadside assist service. Has anyone had to use it? Is it just the NRMA under contract? or do they have their own mechanics do the job? If so, what happens if you are a long way away from their dealership?

Ford roadside assist was included with the new Falcon.

The dealer said that it would be NRMA attending any callouts. (I assume they send RACV, RACQ, etc. when interstate.)

If the NRMA work similar to the RAA here in Rad once your out of the CBD the jobs are contracted out to Mechanics that have a contract to service an area. Others that offer road side assistance would be contracting out.

VW use Alliance Assist. Car just out of warranty and was almost double NRMA membership cost for the same level of support.

Dad finally coming home from hospital after a heart scare and surgery almost 3 weeks ago. :P
Wasn't the heart that kept him in there, rather his knees that have calcium in them and he could not get around sufficiently for him to come home. Got out of POW Randwick this morning.

The lovely lady at Dick Smiths today, who I think did something to circumvent their system to honour my gift card which had been declined twice when she tried to officially put it through her system. I think she had a bit of a 'don't care' attitude today. But even before that she was being very helpful letting me try out the bluetooth speakers I didn't really need but could find nothing else I wanted.

Finding out that her employer has been put into administration might have given her that attitude, but would also be the reason that your gift card was declined.

The cleanliness of SA roads. Not one single discarded bottle or can to be seen.

Only saw one, maybe two suitcases at the most.

That's exactly it. I hadn't been keeping up with things, and just read around lunchtime about them going into administration and knew I was stuffed. But figured it was worth a try. I lucked out!

Was very nearly a great xmas for me! Rob's parents put in towards her scooter for my birthday and our xmas, which was kinda good. But we've been trying to convince her family we're too old to worry for all this gift stuff, but they won't have a bar of it. In particular her brother, who got me a dvd I wasn't interested in, a star wars t shirt with a tie fighter pic on it, and a star wars 'everything you ever wanted to know' book which is cartoon and includes stuff from the clone wars and rebels tv series. That goes with the Marvel universe character book and dvd I haven't yet watched that he got me last year. We weren't getting ourselves anything but Rob did buy us a weather station thing that hasn't worked since we got it (and has more horrible reviews online than good) and then if the gift card hadn't worked that would have topped it off!
