You will find that once a state association gives GPS a green light, then most clubs/DGAs will follow suit.

Oh, and I don't own a GPS unit. They aren't an advantage - just a time saving device.

Yes. My understanding is that they don't allow them in major events.

    Every other state does.

Qld Country Week they are permitted.

The GQ Technical and Match Committees are reviewing the status of every event and GPS/Measuring devises are part of that review.

FNQ Golf Association permits devices as approved by the R and A in all of its events, however if it is used as part of a mobile telephone then the device must be set to silent and if the fone is used to make or receive calls (except in an emergent situation) then penalties apply.

Keperra now allow them. Will be interesting to see if they are permitted at the Bowl next year.

Honestly, I can't see any logical reason why you wouldn't allow them.

Unfortunately the decision made by the NSW GA made many people think that it applied to every club statewide and it doesn't - hence my point

Agreed, but the decision to allow them is not in the hands of the golfer that wants to use one, nor his playing partners.

Obviously the R&A didnt want the Pro's to use them, otherwise they would not have made it an optional local rule.

Having never used one, are they really more effective than yardage markers on sprinkler heads?

You're thinking rationally. I haven't heard an argument against their use that has any merit. I hope there aren't too many "blakeys" on the panel of decision makers....

yes, but could you convince a room full of blakeys to think the same way, given the inherent argumentativeness of the "blakey".

    No.

Where they are good is if you are on a course which has no 150m posts, so you need to work your yardages out from sprinkler heads. If you are nowhere near one then you don't have to waste time looking for a base yardage.

Or if you are on a course where the sprinkler heads do not have measurements of them.

Or if you spray your drive across a fairway (or two)...
