My tourist accommodation business was smashed by the bushfires in Summer, with the shit hitting the fan about two days into the busiest time of the year. We had to refund everything and cancel almost all of our January bookings. I tried to get the 13 week Newstart equivalent back then and the red tape and expense to get the necessary information from my accountant made it a pointless exercise.
The Coronavirus started to impact us in February with international guest bookings way down, and we figured if we could scrape through to Easter, that will give us some extra cashflow to get through winter.....
We’ve received bugger all government assistance from the bushfire crisis and the current crisis. I have had to lay off my staff who are all casual workers collecting the dole (they were working minimal hours to keep their dole). They’re not concerned in the least - they now get twice the money, and don’t have to work at all.
Some of them are in relationships with like-minded people and will therefore receive two double dole payments. Throw in rent assistance, and that means they’re getting over $1200.00 a week tax free. At the same time, my income has dropped to zero.
Something is not right when an employer’s business goes down the toilet and long term dole recipients get their income doubled.
