    Default Complete Newbie from Brisbane

    Hi all,

Introductions, My name is Callum and I live on the north-side of Brisbane, I'm 21 and have recently been hooked on the game of golf.

    My First Game:

I have to say that I had never been to a golf club or driving range in my life until last weekend. I played at a 9 hole course that were all par 3's and apart from scoring 63 (pretty awful I know) I had a bucket load of fun and am now looking to buy a set of clubs this weekend.

    Just a few questions ???
Where are the cheapest places to go and have a game in Brisbane? Are there many Driving ranges?

Does it matter how much I spend on a set of clubs? (Currently looking at Maxfli XD package or a Sanctuary Package? both under $400 and come with Driver, 3 & 5 woods, 2 hybrid clubs, 5 to 9 irons, pitching and sand, putter and golf bag)

Anyways hopefully I will learn heaps whilst I'm here.

    Cheers,
    CJ

PS I don't understand any of the golfing "lingo" yet - please be gentle

Welcome cj, where on the North side are you? The Big Easy driving range is located at Fitzgibbon http://thebigeasygolf.com/ Also Northlakes has a top range http://northlakesgolfclub.com.au/golf/index.php
If you are looking for new gear, keep your eye on the Pro Shop section of this forum. There is always great stuff selling at top prices in there

welcome aboard CJ. Driving ranges are a good place to start to build some confidence. The Victoria Park Driving range just north of the city is a good spot, with cafe and shop there too. I don't know the northside courses too well, but the Corinda 9-hole course and par-3 course are good places to get into golfing in a relaxed atmosphere.

I wouldn't be too worried about your gear at this point. Once you develop a somewhat consistent golf swing you can start to look at getting clubs to suit your build/tempo/power etc..

    Good luck with it all.

Well I'm in Newmarket which is on the North-Side of the river but I suppose would be classed as CBD.

Thanks for the welcome. I just can't wait to get a set of clubs and start practicing. I've been intently watching youtube videos.

    Hi CJ

I got half a set of ancent oldie you can have for free. They aren't forgiving like the modern clubs but at least they got good grip for you to start with, or to put you off completely from this stupid addicting game.

My mate had a set of those Maxfli XD things. They're not going to set the world on fire, but for $330 (what he paid for them) they are pretty decent.

The Tour Special stuff is not bad either for around the same price. In fact, probably better. Just ask Yossarian.

I don't know, I've used my brothers at a driving range and they seemed to be pretty good (Top-Flite XL 5000 set with buggie and bits for $500) I might try and find something like that and then I can't really blame my poor performance on a dodgey old set of clubs like the hire clubs I used on the weekend. (Yeah I'm sure it was the hire clubs I was using

welcome, this place is great. the pro shop is evil and will ruin your savings account, just ask me

You should go to vic park (herston) and spend $110.00 from memory on the intro to golf group lesson. could be most benificial
If it aint for sale the right price has just not been offered

    Thanks,
But I was wanting a full package in the sub $500 mark if possible. I've heard of Golf Globe @ Brendale have great prices. Probably just head up there on Saturday.

Wish they would hurry up and release the i15's. They will improve my game and make me a single figure golfer! Mmmmm, Ping!

I've seen the Cleveland set at the House of Golf. They look really nice for the price. The driver and 3 wood look like re-badged Launchers from a few years ago, the hybrid looks like a re-badged Halo and the irons look exactly like TA5 gunmetals.

If you go there, say Hi to Nick for me ... he's a great guy, used to be the teaching pro at the Deception bay driving range near my place.

    Welcome by the way

Yeah apparently he is the cheapest or best golf shop in Brisbane. Unless anyone knows somewhere else I could look at, if they are open for late night tomorrow

He is probably the cheapest, but that's his market. Not much high-end gear in there.

But he is a nice guy, albeit a salesman.

Well that's good to know. I didn't really want to walk into a shop and have the sales guy throw me out because my budget wasn't big enough to pay for high end gear. I'm really only after something that wont cost an arm and a leg but still give me something to learn with.
