Certainly some of Hitler’s appeal came from his perceived creation of new jobs and pulling Germany out of the economic hole it was in. Hitler and the Nazi's get too much credit for this usually.
As Petey says Europe has a long and somewhat shameful past of dealing with minorities, the Jews amongst them. But then so do most nations and places.
Germany was before, during and after WWII one of the most educated nations this planet has ever seen. Yet the people accepted the murder of millions of people. Possibly because of that education. The thing about Hitler and the Nazis was that they were never prepared to push the German people very far, they molly coddled them. If they had kicked up a stink about the holocaust it is possible that it would have been scaled back. The idea that the Gestapo was all pervasive in German society is not true until 1945. In other parts of Europe it was active.
It wasn't riches or loot or plunder or whatever that motivated the Germans, although it played a part, it was a genuine belief that what they were doing was morally, ethically right. That Nazism was right. I am ranting. It is such a complex issue, there is no right answer, just really scary realities. What people can become.

Just finished reading Tom Doak's: "Anatomy of a Golf Course." Good read for any golfers and it isn't too complicated. However I think it would be best to re-read it a couple of times.

I'm reading McMafia at the moment. Written by a political journo Mmisha Glenny. Awesome in that it is all true and the roots of organised crime run a great deal of what we have today.
A very good book and lots of eye opening moments, but not a light read and can jump around a bit.

1000 Paths To Perfect Golf by Stephen Wilkenson. It is a small book 90mm X 90mm listing 1000 golf quotes:
594 Don't think about swing mechanics during the shot.
595 There are no instant fixes in sports psychology. You have to practice mental skills as well as physical ones.
596 Your best golf is an indication of your ability, not a quirk of good fortune.
597 Be decisive. If a doubt creeps into the mind, stop and refocus on the shot.
598 Keep telling yourself you are a good golfer.
Consciousness and awareness - awareness is being aware of what is happening and being aware of what is happening within ourselves while we are conscious. Where did I leave my glasses?

I'm reading Ian Irvine's Destiny of the Dead. It starts straight back into the action, and I'm having trouble remembering details from the two books before it. Fortunately, I've got some idea from the glossary of characters, etc in the back.

Irvine is a really good fantasy author.

Hayek is obviously a far superior economist to Marx.

Marx was a very good social and cultural commentator, but a rubbish economist.

What is the jist of the book?

I'm currently reading Elizabeth Pantley - The No-Cry Sleep Solution and the No-Cry Nap solution.

Neither of these two books seem to be having the desired effect.

Apalling spelling. I thought youngsters like yourself only read comics and stuff on the internet that has pictures and no more than a page of words. News reports inform me that you do not have the attention span to read a book, due to all the television and computer games. Have the media been lying to me?

Re Hayek and Marx - it retail(s) ed at A$244 for 200 pages (forget the 40 pages of notes and references) and the pages are 6" by 9". So once I refused to pay for the book at that price (they shipped it in and the publisher would not accept a return) I got it for $120 (still F$%$ing expensive). Initial reading is strong points put across to explain Marx in terms of recent times as well as historic context. I'm only initially into it so cannot comment with any merit yet.

It was early in the morning. Get the gist?

The media lies, except today tonight, today. They tell the truth.

Only a couple of short stories, but I played Dragonriders of Pern on the Commodore 64, if that counts. Her work tends to get classed as science fiction, instead of fantasy, so I've never really bothered.

Reading "Dream On" by John Richardson at the moment, some of you might know his story: sort of a hacker (although he played off 15 as a youngster) embarking on a challenge to play one scratch round in one year. He posted on ISG while he was trying to do it and got some support and lots of ridicule...

Einstein by Walter Isaacson. Surprisingly I am actually gaining some understanding of his Theory of Relativity and the The Special Theory of Relativity - not the maths of course just the 'philosophy' of it. Einstein's great power (genius) was not really the mathematics, what the book poignantly displays is his ability to conduct 'thought experiments', visualisations if you will. Then have it proven with the maths later. Well worth the read!

Andy if you like a good fantasy read I recently found David Gemmel (though he is prolific and been around for ever) but isn't too bad. I am guessing you would be all over authors like Jordan, Hobbs, Donaldson and the likes...
