I just got this car yesterday.
Love it, just did my first trip to work and average fuel consumption was 3.9L per 100kms for a 72km trip (all Highway driving)
we eat 'em up, we swallow 'em down, we spit 'em out, "no homo" Golflink
Wife | 2005 Ford Falcon XR6 soon to be Jeep either Compass or Patriot
A friend of mine did exactly this. She still curses herself every time she has to fill it up. Nowhere near as nice to drive, not as much space as she expected and it goes through fuel like Simmsy goes through drivers. She absolutely hates it now.

I can back this up, my best friend bought a Jeep and she said exactly the same thing, terrible on fuel. She got rid of it after 3 months just cause it was sooooo thirsty

Yep, and ipso facto their resale value is absolutely horrible. On the upside fuel costs aren't the largest cost factor with cars. Depreciation and keeping it on the road (rego, insurance and mainterance) are the biggest wacks by long way. Unfortunately the Jeep comes at the top of the class for most of those, add fuel addiction and they are horrible to own. I have a few friends who have Jeeps for life, too costly to replace, sunk cost etc.
Yeah I have been looking at resale values and so in this week and was already starting to get concerned, the only one that seems to hold its value in comparison is the wrangler series.
Buy an i20 and put the savings to your mortgage. Better still, buy one that is 12 months old for half the price of the others you are talking about.
what he said!
still got my santa fe diesel and now have with the job a hilux 4WD V6 auto crew cab ute. why they have the V6 and auto has me buggered! pass everything
but a bowser!
2003 Astra hatchback, averages about 7.3L/100km in city driving and mid-high 6s on the highway, and my PB is 24 archive boxes fully loaded
Family car is an 03 Magna wagon on dual fuel, definitely nowhere near as spacious inside as a Commode or Falcon but our kids are only 2 and 4 so it's good for a few years yet. Spare tyre eats into boot space but the boot is so big anyway it's not a real issue. I love wagons and hatchbacks as I'm always carrying stuff around for kids or my hobbies, I can't see myself ever buying a sedan.
Crappy old VE series 2 sportswagon, just love these cars. i flog them to death for 2 years and move them on and have never had one break.
I mean i flog them, tow 1.6 t boat at 120km/hr on freeway, lives on dirt roads, 80k km's a year plus, great car.
After 2 years trade them for same, i wash them 3 times, 1st time about 2 weeks old, about 1 year later and when i trade them, my theory is the dirt protects the paint, must work as the dealers always comment how good the paint is
ps. don't ever buy one of my traded cars hehe

took the new toyota/Subaru joint project car for a test drive other day (Toyota 86, not sure what Subaru are calling it)
If ur looking for a quick, fun car to drive ona budget - get this. It is awesome fun to drive on tight roads (took it for a drive through east perth, and burswood), tight gearbox and goes like a rocket.
The opposite end of a practical, and i imagine it would go through fuel like a fat kid on a cupcake, but fun nontheless.
On the practical side - looking at getting the FJ Cruiser or Prado. Not sure yet which one. I like the look of the FJ and it just 'feels' better than the Prado, but i've always been a fan of the Diesels.
Thoughts?

Get a diesel Prado. Fantastic on resale. Very good vehicle. If you need pricing assistance when the time comes, let me know what your best quote is and I can see if I can help you.

Cheers.
Im considering the leasing options as well, just doing the sums to see what will work out best for me.
I just had an i30 as a rental car in Brisbane, it was a really good little car and I will probably look at getting one for the wife when she is due for one.
