It is funny you say that about Merlot. Since Sideways I also struggled with the stuff.

And Henno, I too placed a similar budget on a bottle of Merlot. However, I think there is some seriously good Merlot to be found out there. We had one the other weekend by the glass and could not believe how good it was. Got us thinking about investigating it further.....

Merlot tastes like pencil shavings. Can't understand the attraction.

Generally agree on your shiraz call. Campbells Bobbie Burns shiraz @ $23ish rocks.

Have tried a couple of All Saints sparkling shiraz. Not bad, but not really my cup of tea, so to speak. Didn't really know what temp to drink it at, so I chilled the first bottle and it was not real flash. Had the second at room temp and it was much better.
    Forum needs more banter.

Not a big fan of sparkling Shiraz, but Shiraz is a fav. Enjoy a nice Wirra Wirra and Pepper Jack is great.

Just in the last couple of months have been training myself to enjoy a good white wine, so Chardy and Sav Blanc get run too.

Agreed Chappy, Pepperjack is a great drop, also agree with the Walrus about Hanwood Shiraz being a good one for under $10.

Don't know how you guys feel about cleanskins, but there is a Coonawarra Cab Sauv that you can get from Dan Murphy's for $10 that is excellent (has the black label). For mine it is on a par with some of the $20-$30 cab sauvs around.

For a merlot, and sticking at the $15 mark, can't beat the grant burge hilcott i reckon. Hook in!

I have had an open discussion with my wife recently, she has bought me 2 bottles of Grange for different occasions of the last few years (92' and a 96').

When is a good time to drink them, what occasion is special enough to pull the cork on these babies. I know that you can get them open by a certified wine boofhead to be checked that it's OK and then resealed.

We have had 3 kids, I've completed a Masters degree at Uni, have I missed the boat a little.

    Be interested in your thoughts?

And before anyone asks, no I am not sharing

Any of the Cape Mentelle wines. A bit pricey but worth it.

If you start out depressed everything’s kind of a pleasant surprise.

Try a "Lovegrass" Its the D'arenberg we usually end up taking home. Only available from cellar door, not really a problem as its less than 30 mins from home.
After years of drinking Big reds im tending towards Merlot more lately. My pick of McLaren vale being the "Ratbag" from Hugh Hamilton.

Theres only a few times when you should drink beer when it's above 45 deg's , theres no bourbon left or it's free.

Due to altercations years ago I can no longer stomach wine, especially red But I used to drink a bit of it in my uni days. But while the other kids were drinking coolabah, I wouldn't touch anything that didn't come with a cork and generally never paid less than $20 a bottle; and that was in 1990!

I was a bit of a wine snob back then - can longer stomach the stuff. What a waste!

Tonight, my poison (literally) is a Hardys Nottage Hill 2007 merlot - $9 worth. I too have had my issues with merlot but am forgiving when it comes to booze - to my detriment tonight. The bottle'o I went to wasn't my usual and they didn't have much of a budget range. Whilst not undrinkable - is there such a thing? (unless corked) - there are better lower range options available.

Any fans of Villa Maria? Mum brought some of the Sav Blanc with her and it has been going down a treat!

    No.

Head to Bootleg Brewery. Best spot in all of Margs.

Margaret River wine generally underperforms in my opinion. You have to hunt down to find decent stuff.

Apparently, the most consumed drink in Australia is the Cappacino. The Italians cringe as its meant to be a morning drink, but the Aussies guzzle it 24/7.

Altercations ?? I know many people stuggle with the sulphur dioxide (preservative 220). Its used as an anti bacterial and added as a matter of course in the wine process.
You may be sensitive to this. The better wineries blanket the wine with inert gas limiting its exposure to the air. They dont need the same levels of SO2.
If you look you can find wines which have been produced with no sulpur dioxide. I couldnt imaging living and not drinking wine. Im mentioning it just in case it gets you back on the wagon.
